Graduate / Statement of Purpose for PhD in Computer Science (with focus on AI in healthcare) [2]
Hello. I would really appreciate it if you guys could suggest some improvements to the following SOP. The goal is to persuade the admissions committee to award full funding for my PhD studies :) Thanks a ton!

In our country, a popular conversation topic among middle-aged and elderly people is to discuss their illnesses, sometimes almost competitively. It is often heartbreaking to see our loved ones struggle with health issues. This experience influenced me to work at the intersection of AI and healthcare, with a focus on enhancing model interpretability and explainability. Building on this motivation, I am eager to join the X PhD program at X UniversityName, where I hope to expand my research experience and technical skills to develop impactful AI solutions in healthcare, while preparing for a long-term career in academia.
I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Y University, Bangladesh. During my undergraduate studies, I chose Artificial Intelligence as my major and Biomedical Signal Processing as my minor elective course. I have successfully authored 2 journal papers and 2 conference papers. Additionally, I worked as a Research Assistant under one of the professors at my university. I strive to ensure that my research has a practical and real-world impact.
In the final semester of my undergraduate studies, my team and I developed a Federated Learning (FL) based multi-class classification system for brain tumors. While working on this, we noticed a possible issue where the most popular aggregation method in FL prioritizes institutions with larger datasets, even though some institutions may have better-quality data due to advanced infrastructure. To address this, we proposed a new aggregation method that gives a slight initial advantage to institutions with higher-quality data. This allowed our FL model to reach a high level of accuracy more quickly. The work led to a conference publication at the 2024 ABC Symposium.
My most rewarding research experience was a study that combines the domains of drug discovery and computer vision. I began by replicating an existing study on drug discovery for COVID-19. Later, I developed an image-based classification model that uses 2D molecular structures to classify drug candidates for inhibiting Dengue. Drug discovery methods often face challenges due to insufficient data. To solve this issue, I utilized two different augmentation strategies. After comparing two augmentation methods, it became clear that one helped the model learn finer molecular details, leading to faster training and better drug candidate recognition. This study was accepted in a Q1 journal named Z. It was a challenging study that required learning new concepts and presenting them clearly to reviewers. This study gave me the confidence that I can work in a completely new field and conduct a meaningful study within that domain.
I worked as a Research Assistant under the supervision of Professor Dr. XYZ. My main focus was on developing lightweight and efficient models for computer vision tasks. My responsibilities included model design, dataset preparation, performance evaluation, and optimizing algorithms. Apart from the technical duties, this role also gave me exposure to the administrative side of academic research. I had the opportunity to assist in writing grant proposals, preparing project reports, and learning about the process of applying for research funding. This well-rounded experience gave me a stronger foundation in both the practical and organizational aspects of conducting impactful research.
Apart from my research, I have spent most of my professional life working as an Artificial Intelligence Trainer for a US-based organization named Deft Tech Inc. This role allowed me to train Large Language Models (LLMs) for world-renowned companies. I have been a part of several projects where I have conducted a range of tasks. One of them was to verify and refine the code that LLMs generate. This task involved creating a complex prompt designed to make the LLMs produce errors or inefficient code. After that, I had to write the correct code, which was used to refine the system. This role offered invaluable insights into large-scale AI operations and the rigorous methods employed by top companies to develop advanced LLMs.
During my time at university, I was also actively involved in extracurricular activities. As Treasurer of the Gulf Student Chapter in 2022, I handled external funding and financial reporting to the university authority as well as the Gulf headquarters. Moreover, I led the Research and Development team, which provided foundational research guidance to new students. Apart from this, I have conducted a few workshops at my university, including a session where I explained AI to a group of high-school students. This experience honed my ability to simplify complex technical details for a broad audience.
This naturally connects to my long-term goal of building a successful career as an educator. During my time at university, I worked as a home tutor and taught several high-school students. The experience pushed me to think critically and creatively, as it required me to break down complicated ideas into simpler terms. Moreover, my father has spent most of his life teaching Mathematics to university students. His journey made me familiar with the lifestyle and demands of the teaching profession, where deep study and continuous effort are essential. This combination of personal experience and inspiration influenced me to pursue a career as an academic. At the same time, I want to work on taking AI to a level closer to human betterment as well as understanding.
