Say no to Gun Violence
Gun violence is widely recognized as a major-and growing-national problem in the United States, which spans among age, race, and geography, as well as historically high firearm fatality rates, in recent years. Post-2020 firearm-related homicides and suicides have escalated, with databases and research noting inconsistent trends across states and cities. At the same time, community-based initiatives and regulatory actions have emerged, creating a large collection of evidence on what works to stop shootings, restrict access in emergency situations, and stop the flow of firearms into criminal markets. Each citation provides an objective summary of the source and evaluates its relevance, credibility, and usefulness for understanding the issue and evidence-based solutions. Collectively, these sources present gun violence as an avoidable public health and safety issue that calls for joint efforts from law enforcement, data systems, community interventions, and legislative reform.
The history of gun violence in America goes back to before the birth of America. Guns were created in the 10th century which started the whole gun violence. The first recorded gun was in 1364. Also guns started getting used in 1380, Hand guns are known across Europe. The only way to use the gun was, "Before the matchlock, guns were fired by holding a burning wick to a "touch hole" in the barrel igniting the powder inside. A shooter uses one hand for firing, and a prop to steady the gun."(Gun timeline, paragraph 1) Guns were created to use in the military and protect yourself. In the 1300s and 1400s they used them to settle disputes with other people. The people in the 1300s thought this would be an effective way to handle their problems. As years go by they handle their problems with guns also creating more and better products of guns.
Guns came to America in the 15th century. When one of the shipwrecks associated with Columbus and his colonization-discovery of Hispaniola was discovered a while back, matchlocks and a hand cannon were recovered from the wreckage. The American Revolution would not have been won without guns. Guns have been around for centuries in America. The colonists and pirates brought over guns from Europe and other countries which started this whole gun violence problem we have today. America wouldn't have been a country without the colonists having guns. Colonists used the guns to fight off the British Army. The colonists were standing up for their freedom against Britain, America wanted to become its own country. So without guns being created we were outnumbered by the British Army. Guns will forever be a part of America history but gun violence is making it hard for people to have access to guns.
More people are choosing to not address the problem with gun violence. Some people argue that gun control laws won't work because of rights. The Second Amendment guarantees law-abiding Americans the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (US Constitution, Second Amendment). But over time, gun control laws have placed limits on that freedom. The second amendment creates a huge problem with stopping gun violence. It puts a restraint on how to solve the problem because the American people have the right to own a gun. The reason why people come to America is for freedom and if we change laws that aren't in favor of the American people our country will go down in flames.
Some people argue that it will only affect people that are law-abiding citizens and gun control laws won't do anything. Criminals, by definition, do not obey the law. Gun control laws only affect law-abiding people who go through legal avenues to obtain firearms. Criminals, by definition, do not obey the law. Gun control laws only affect law-abiding people who go through legal avenues to obtain firearms. The problem we are facing is how the government is going to make improvements to laws without it affecting the American citizens that do follow the laws. It is hard to make adjustments to the American government because people that intend to use guns in a violent way will still get their hands on guns either way. If you follow the laws and meet the requirements then you still get the right to own a gun. We want to protect the lives that are being harmed by gun violence that didn't legally own the right to have a gun and access to one.
Innocent people will keep on dying everyday if the problem doesn't get solved. School shootings happen too often and if it doesn't get solved more innocent lives will be lost. There have been 64 school shootings in the United States so far this year, as of October 27. The incidents left 26 people dead and at least 100 other victims injured, according to CNN's analysis of events reported by the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Everytown for Gun Safety. Loads of parents are being worried if their kids are going to be safe at school and are suggesting to put their kids in online school. Innocent kids are being harmed for no reason because some people have access to guns that shouldn't have access to them. If I was a kid I would be scared to go to school. 10 years ago when I was their age I loved going to school and hanging out with my friends and playing with toys. Nowadays you don't know what could happen to people's lives due to gun violence can be taken in seconds.
If people don't focus on the threat of gun violence in our society we won't save the lives of the innocent that get killed in the crossfire. Mourning the death of a child whose only mistake was venturing outside to play when someone armed with a gun came to the neighborhood hunting for an enemy. "Nine years old, (he) was shot and killed while doing what every child in our city should able to do without a second thought ... playing with friends on a warm summer evening just outside his front door," said Brown. "Now, instead of planning for his future, Janari's parents are arranging for their child's funeral." When you want to have kids you will want to be able to go out in public and be safe to do whatever they want. Without the chance to lose their lives just because they wanted to go out and enjoy the environment and their neighborhood.
If we reinforced gun laws it would help eliminate gun violence. States that don't have reinforced gun laws have seen an increase in gun violence. The states with the highest firearm mortality rates are Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Wyoming. These states all received an "F" grade for their weak gun laws. States with "F" grades saw 61 percent higher homicide rates than states with "A" or "B" grades-states with the strongest gun laws. In 2020, the 10 states with the highest rates of gun deaths among children and teenagers ages 1-19 were Louisiana, Alaska, Mississippi, South Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Alabama. All of these states received an "F" grade for their weak gun laws. If we strengthen laws it will help protect the American people. We see improvements in states with more guns laws and strict laws and it's protecting the American people.
Three solutions to fixing the problem of gun violence in America. Implement stronger firearm safety laws. Passing background checks and/or purchase permitting, along with Extreme Risk laws and secure gun storage requirements. Rejecting Shoot First (also known as Stand Your Ground) and permitless carry laws. This will help protect the citizens rights and everyone's safety. You can say it won't be effective and criminals will still get their hands on guns but at least we can try as a country to do our best and protect lives. America's birth right is to have freedom and gun violence is taking away people's freedom. More laws will make it harder to get a gun for people that shouldn't be able to have access to guns. You can say it will just not do anything and it will just hurt the law abiding citizens but it would do the opposite. You only won't be able to access a gun if you don't meet the legal standards to get a gun.
Also, invest in community violence intervention and prevention. Community violence intervention programs are designed to reduce gun violence in the most impacted neighborhoods through outreach by credible messengers who work with individuals involved in gun violence. These programs are most effective when cities and states invest in comprehensive intervention and prevention efforts that engage a wide range of stakeholders and community leaders. This will strengthen the minds of individuals so they don't get out and mess up with their lives because they are angry at themselves. As a human we all get upset and some people will follow through with things their head is saying. So if we try to push community violence intervention and prevention we can try to save the lives of others and them. Everyone hits a dead end and if we could assist them we could sway them to make better decisions. Mental health is a big reason why gun violence is happening so much. We are giving access to guns to people mentally not in the right head space and they act out like shooting up schools or killing innocent people.
Make every gun owner have to go through a safety class. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. Lots of people that are gun owners don't handle their guns in a respectful way. You never point your gun at someone even if it doesn't have a mag. Through a safety class they can learn about the lives that get harmed through gun violence and will make them be serious about how they see gun violence. Also, the safety class will help them understand that we aren't trying to take their freedom to own a gun, we are just trying to save lives. This will be the right step to helping decrease gun violence in the states. Rules and laws are made because they protect people in America. Gun safety will promote that gun stores are taking a step into the right direction of eliminating gun violence.
In conclusion, gun violence is a serious and complicated public health and safety problem in the United States. It has roots from the history of firearm use and cultural views on guns. Even with constitutional protections and ongoing debates over gun rights, the rising number of firearm related deaths, suicides, and mass shootings highlights the urgent attention needed for effective solutions that will make a difference. Strengthening gun laws, implementing community intervention programs, and promoting responsible gun ownership through safety classes which are essential steps to lessen the impact of gun violence. Tackling this problem requires teamwork between lawmakers, communities, and changes in cultural opinions to protect innocent lives and maintain the freedoms of the nation. We can only make a difference if we all hope to create a safer society where gun violence is managed.
