Graduate / Personal statement for Petroleum Engineering masters program at UTA [2]
I would like my SOP (below) to be reviewed so I can give this application my best shot!
It is said that "dreams drive men of purpose". Noteworthy achievers have always been driven by a simple goal, to make a difference. Chemical Engineering kindled the enthusiasm in me to try and contribute my part to the environment and it is this dream that has been the driver for my decision to take my knowledge base to the next level by dynamic hands-on experience amidst intellectual minds. I believe that being associated with the Petroleum Engineering course in your esteemed university would be the motivating and guiding factor I require for achieving my ultimate professional goal.
The "donkey" pump on the way to my school in Muscat was one intriguing sight that made me consider and in fact discover the field of petroleum engineering. The Chemical Engineering course at my undergraduate level of education gave me the strong foundation I required along with a great deal of motivation that I had it in me to stand out. I was also an active member of the IIChE during my college days and participating in its various activities gave me the exposure and molding I required. Apart from the technical coursework which included fascinating topics like fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, reaction engineering, chemical process technology and others, we were also exposed to hands-on experimentation of the several theories in our program. In addition, my mentor ably guided and instigated me to explore my area of interest apart from the usual project work that was a part of our curriculum. This was when I took up alternative fuel technologies and during my research I realized that until alternative energy technologies are firmly established the demand for petroleum will always exist. During this challenging period of unrelenting research worldwide for extraction technologies to bring out the maximum remaining petroleum from under the earth, this would be the perfect time to contribute, if any. For that I need a unique advantage which I believe would be truly delivered by your esteemed university.
I am a true believer and implementer of the fact that service begins from within. Apart from organizing eye check-up camps, dental check-up camps at schools in my city and regularly donating my blood I also involve myself in social activities that involve helping the underprivileged in our society. Casual outdoor games like badminton help keep me fresh and I generally unwind by playing some personal favorites on the keyboard.
Subsequent to securing my undergraduate degree I decided I needed the exposure of a professional technical environment in the Oil & Gas sector to analyze if I had my heart in the right place. At L&T, the glimpses of real-time exposure to the oil extraction activities we receive kindled more enthusiasm in me than I had imagined. Working with a renowned Oil & Gas consultant also gave me the understanding of the nuances of this dynamic sector and taught me professionalism to help me deal with issues sensibly and sometimes innovatively. I appreciated the fruits of synergy when we saw our design being successfully implemented and our modules being sailed-away.
Every time I was showered with accolades, be it securing the best outgoing student of our entire batch in college, winning the 1st position at National level technical seminars, receiving university level scholarships for exemplary academic performance or getting my work published in a technical journal, my pride filled my heart with a sense of desire to take my achievements to the next level and work on something that brings joy from within. There is nothing that excites me more than the thought of focusing my energy on topics like reservoir simulation and well testing and completion technologies which I would love to understand in-depth. I will try to focus my endeavors on a specific subject that will most meet the needs of India's petroleum industry.
University of Texas at Austin is reputed for its specialty in Petroleum Engineering, which ranks at the very top in the United States. The specialty has a very strong faculty and advanced research facilities. It offers impressive research-intensive programs and many field trips. Such an academic environment agrees very well with my academic and research interests. In my future program, I will continue to build up my theoretical knowledge, consolidate my basic skills, and learn the most recent advanced technologies. I earnestly believe that my degree program in the University of Texas at Austin will be a fruitful one.
