Scholarship / Scholarship essay for Msc International Business and Corporate Social Responce [2]

Hi Guys, i need help with my essay for a scholarship.
i was asked to provide a statement of 300 words explaining how the proposed study will benefitmy home country and to describe the peculiar skills that i seek from the proposed qualification and how these will be applied on my return. Thanks for the help.

The very essence and life of any business lies in its profit margins. There has been a shift in this ideology in recent times. This is the same thinking that will drive a multinational such as Standard Chartered Bank to be involved in a non- profit generating act, such as renovating the Dworwulu Special School for the disabled, or that Newmont Ghana, a mining company will seek to renovate the schools within the areas within which they operate. Needless to say, there is some profit in these activities, which they will reap, one way or another.

There is no definition for CSR, but there are common themes amongst companies implementing its principles: giving back to the society, IT training, building schools, building places of convenience, providing affordable housing facilities, and the list is endless. The focus at the end of the day is simple; most companies today are constantly in search of ways of giving back to the communities within which they work the very source of their profits.

In the light of all this, one will suppose that Ghana as a nation has fully appreciated the concept of CSR, but this is an opinion only the shallow minded will hold. Why do I want to study this course, the answer is simple, I want to explore more into the subject and its implications and impact on the livelihood and living standards of the locals.

Recently, the former president John Agyekum Kuffor decided that the country should invest in another electricity power plant at Bui. This area is a predominantly farming area and constructing a dam in this area means that they indigenes have to be resettled. Then what happens to their farm lands, their source of income? It takes a mind that has been through a program such as this to advice the government on the right steps to take: provide better housing facilities, training to enable them find alternative sources of income, set up schools for their children and satisfactory compensation.

This is an instance of the government engaging in CSR. When it comes to private businesses, there seem to be a drive towards a form of CRS practice that does little to actually address the issue at stake that is in how business activities can bring sustainable benefits to the poor. Most profit seeking corporate entities are unaware of the cyclical nature of supporting their working environments to improve profit margins.

I wish to know the challenges organizations face in addressing CSR and issues arise from attempts to combine the social, environmental and economic impacts that arise from its activities. In addition, I know this course will expose me to the critical application of classical and contemporary theories and the advancement of management practice from both macro and micro-organizational perspectives. Eventually I hope to gain the authority to advice on issues of CSR in. I am also interested in assisting the NGO's with relevant research findings and support their sensitization initiatives.

After completing my Masters programme, I would like to continue my education to obtain a PhD.D. in International Relations. This degree will enable me to develop a career in a specialist consultancy and International Accountancy firms both the private and public sector of Ghana and will also equip me to provide expert advice to government agencies on the need to incorporate CSR into the operations of any entity. I will also be engaged in teaching to impart the knowledge I gained during my course of study.

I have enjoyed a holistic approach in my first degree in the social sciences and have become very interested in the implications CSR have on the development of any economy and social policy making and implementation. Furthermore, I have a keen interest in how businesses can support their environment and I would like to continue exploring the subject in the Faculty of Business and Law of De Montford University, Leicester, United Kingdom. Ultimately, I would like to work with the government of Ghana and other international agencies to promote development research. Also, I intend to impart the knowledge gained through teaching and research. Eventually I hope to put smiles on the faces of the majority of people in Ghana who will otherwise be disadvantages due to the activities of profit seeking businesses in Ghana.
