Intended Major

At age nineteen I became a wife, and four months later I got pregnant. I was excited as any normal expecting mother should be, but unfortunately that excitement didn't last too long. In the early stage of my pregnancy I began to feel pain around my abdominal area. Moments later I started spotting, and later on that day my doctor confirmed that I was having a miscarriage. I laid there in the hospital crying holding a little pink bowl with my son in it, and wishing that there was something I could of done differently to save my baby's life. Although, he was very pink, bald, and skin so thin you can see right through him, he was my beautiful little angel. I kissed him goodbye, and told him that "Mommy loves you, and I will see you in heaven one day." I handed him back to my doctor and broke down. Two years later I gave birth to a very premature baby girl at twenty three weeks. Her chances of survival were very slim as well. I gave her the name Miracle because it was a "miracle" that she stayed alive for nine days. Loosing my son and daughter gave me the burning desire and passion to become a Neonatal Nurse. This was one way I could help save a life.

In 2004, I spent my entire summer inside Kapiolani Hospital next to my dying grandmother's bedside. My grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer although she never smoked in her life. I never realized how serious second hand smoke kills until I witness my grandmother's pain. Every morning at eight her breakfast arrived: one piece of wheat toast, eggs, fruits, and a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice. My job was to keep track of what she ate and how much. It was the same routine for lunch and dinner. I was grandmother's "personal caregiver and entertainer." I fed her, I bathed her, helped her in and out of bed, and assisted to every need she had. At times when I seen my grandmother feeling down I sang to her even though my vocal weren't in tune with me. Seeing my grandmother smile meant the world to me. Every night I would lay next to my grandmother and rub her back until she fell asleep, but that night everything changed. I fell asleep before she did and woke up to the sound of my grandfather's voice weeping next to me. Every morning my grandmother would wake me up, but today she didn't.

My interest in the medical field developed as I started to notice that there weren't any Tongan RN's out there. Well at least I thought there weren't any because I never met one in my life and the only time I seen them in the hospitals is when they were the patients. Now, I have an ambition to become a nurse! I am currently enrolled at Merritt College taking the prerequisites for nursing and I hope to transfer to Samuel Merritt's nursing program in the fall of 2013. I believe without desire, there is nothing to look forward to, and without nothing to look forward to, there is no desire. With the experiences of care I've gained through out my life I know it will help me along my journey into the medical field.
