Undergraduate / (the Haitian culture) How your family history, culture or environment influenced you? [5]
Being part of the Haitian culture has influenced many parts of my life. As a child, there were tales of my ancestors and their contribution to the Haitian Revolution of 1804. These stories inspired me to work diligently toward my life goals and to remain true to my goals. My ancestors' ability to fight for their beliefs taught me about the true power of unity and determination.
One of the most important qualities of the Haitian culture is embodied in the values of G-d and the blessing that he has given you. From childhood, I was taught that nothing in life is for sure. One day you could have everything you wanted, and the next day it could all be gone. I took these values for granted until one dreadful day my parents informed me that there was a possibility of us losing our home. My family and I immediately put our faith in God and trusted he would bring us out of this predicament that we were in.
When I think about my childhood, many influential factors guided me through adolescence. I gained strength and pride in my culture and myself. I am confident with my ability to overcome whatever challenges I will face. My freshman year of college will set the foundation for the rest of my life; however, my journey begins now. As my strengths have helped me to get to where I am today, the values that I learned will enable me to soar beyond all limitations.
