Graduate / I have gained knowledge and experience within different health fields - CASPA -- PA school narrative [3]

CASPA- PA Narrative. Describe your motivation for wanting to be a PA.

This is my rough draft thus far. I really want to stand out with a good opening statement but I'm not sure if this is a silly one that won't be taken seriously. Should I switch the first 2 paragraphs? Or just get rid of either? Basically I don't know what to do with the first two paragraphs. Also, I'm having trouble tying some of my thoughts together and I'm not sure if I'm putting too much information in it. Thanks!

I remember one topic in particular when I was in second grade that I found a struggle to grasp, which was hiccups. I remember learning that they are involuntary spasms and have no clear reason for occurring. I struggled to grasp this concept because for such a simple and common occurrence, it seemed so strange that there was not a simple and common cause and cure to go with it. I still remember where I was sitting in the classroom, the exact science workbook on hiccups I was reading, and how frustrated I was at such a young age to not have a definite answer. My yearning for answers is a trait that I have carried with me and have learned to not always believe the first answer I hear, but to question everything and take advantage of technology for further research. These characteristics have been my motivation to become a great Physician Assistant because I won't stop at the first answer or give up when I meet an obstacle.

When I was growing up, I had many predictable career goals for my future; veterinarian, teacher, or an FBI agent to be exact. None of the choices were closely related, but I did have an eagerness to learn, help others, and have an interesting, exciting career. It was not until my father mentioned the career "Physician Assistant" when we were discussing college majors in high school that I began to research and take an interest in the specialty. My father first heard about the career from a customer of his who was a Physician Assistant, and this spurred my interest because I was able to interview him to learn about the career first hand. As I finished up last years in high school I began to focus on the science courses and took an interest in Chemistry and Biology because I found it fascinating to learn how things work and why they do. I then began to notice how prevalent and autonomous Physician Assistant's were in the community and longed to be part of such a fast growing and rewarding career.

My motivation towards becoming a Physician's Assistant comes directly from my desire to learn and use my natural skills and experience to the best of my ability. My current degree in progress is Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, and I chose this as a precursor to give me experience in health care prior to a PA graduate program. This major has been an extremely challenging process but has given me incredible insight to direct patient care. The nursing curriculum has allowed me to view the material I have learned in not just a scientific view but also with a holistic view. The nursing process has allowed me to not only learn the core concepts of the material, but also how to apply it theoretically and physically in the clinical setting. I have also been able to follow and work with Physician's, Physician Assistant's, nurses, nursing assistants, radiology technologists, and Nurse Practitioner's in various hospital settings, such as in the Operating Room at several different hospitals, medical surgical floors, and also treatment teams for psychiatric units. From shadowing in several health care settings, I was able to learn that the roles of the Physician Assistant are not limited to universal tasks, but are actually specialized depending on the setting.

This year I was presented with a great opportunity to visit Ecuador with Habitat for Humanity to build houses for impoverished areas. I have been collecting donations from various hospitals of basic care supplies as I will be traveling with several nurses and I want to share my gained knowledge with those who need it most. What I hope to gain from this experience is an understanding for the actual culture and language of Ecuador and also the importance of more health care providers in various settings. I think this experience will assist with my future career to help me understand cultural competence in the health care field as well as emphasizing the need for preventative medication, not just in our country but world-wide.

I have gained knowledge and experience within different health fields through shadowing Physician's Assistants as well as following other health care workers. After spending valuable time learning from experienced specialty's, I feel confident in my abilities to provide meticulous patient care. My personal experience has also allowed me to not be afraid of patients and their families, but to be outgoing and confront problems as they arise. I have also learned to have confidence to ask a question when I do not know the answer. My perfectionist personality will never waiver in my hunger for knowledge and pursuit for answers.

Well, I'm not going to lie -- I never wanted to be a nurse. I chose nursing as a major because I felt it would be a better challenge and give me much more experience than taking the regular route of Biology or Chemistry where you aren't exposed to patients and health care settings. With Bio or Chem I could have easily pulled through with very high GPA but would not be anywhere near as confident as a health care professional starting a PA program. That was my intent with the BSN anyway
