Undergraduate / " Integrity has become a lifestyle" - my Issue of Importance Essay [3]
At a high school assembly, my principal once asked "What is integrity to you?" I came to the realization that integrity had exceeded its definition of being honest and sincere. The complexity of integrity could mean holding true to one's morals, or making the right decision. But the fundamental question was, who has the right to decide what is moral and what is not? Currently, integrity is not addressed as an issue, but with the current issues, integrity is involved. Essentially, it is universally important in communities, technology and politics.
As a teen, integrity is the best characteristic to have. Beginning in middle school, many students are open to new opportunities whether it is joining a club, or exploring their likes and dislikes. In addition, many teens are also pressured into the world of cheating, and even drugs and drinking. I had a close friend who was a fellow girl scout. We had known each other for nine years and her family was a great influence. We both had summer jobs as lifeguards, and to my surprise, I discovered she had been smoking marijuana. What teens forget is that they have control over their own mind and body. Only they can decide that what they are doing is right or wrong. Texting while driving is another issue teens have. With the influence of adults, teens feel they have the right to talk on the phone while on the road, even if it is illegal. Once again, integrity plays a key role. We should all use our better judgment to keep safe, knowing that distractions can be dangerous just as drugs can be harmful.
Needless to say, the lack of integrity is shown through the most beneficial creation invented by man which is technology. Each generation is continuously being stimulated by speedier, more advanced forms of knowledge and communication. With the convenience comes responsibility that poses a greater challenge for the modern society. Technology, worldwide, has been taken advantage of. Networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have allowed many to display their personal information, which has made hacking easier. Committing such crimes as financial fraud and piracy has become effortless to those who are skilled. Recently, my mother had to change her financial account name and password, as well as re-enter all other pertinent information. A hacker overseas had been trying to access her bank account. This goes to show that the absence of integrity is ubiquitous.
Well known respected athletes and celebrities are caught up in the technological world just as well as political figures. With political power and high status, so many feel as though they can avoid being caught cheating. This sends a twisted message to the future leaders that idolize them. The importance of integrity is significant to my generation and for the generations to come. Out of all the people in the world, those that should have the most integrity would be political representatives. After running and being voted into office, integrity is expected by the public. Our U.S. leaders are being paid by the taxpayers and any misrepresentation cannot be tolerated. It is shameful to hear the scandals of married politicians committing adultery but, of course, in denial until the truth comes out.
Integrity has become a lifestyle that not many choose to follow. The importance of having integrity could mean one day having a more perfect world. Many who stop caring are the ones who have no integrity, such as the driver texting or talking on a cell phone, or the computer hackers who are accessing accounts that do not belong to them. Ultimately, deciding the morality of a situation is dependent on individuals if the well-being of the world is of importance.
