Letters / Research Position Cover Letter (a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering) [3]
Dear Sir or Madam:
Your advertisement for Research Associate positions in Hamlyn Centre, posted on the job vacancies webpage of Imperial College London, caught my attention. I was drawn to the ad by my strong interest in the position of ``Research Associate, reference: ****, No: ****". As an experienced researcher in signal processing and compressed sensing (CS), I am always interested to apply this technique to various applications. Healthcare is one of the most promising areas.
As a Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering of Imperial College, I have devoted myself to the signal processing area, especially compressed sensing for 4 years. In my current work I mainly focus on the theoretical research of designing and constructing structured and deterministic sensing matrices in CS. In this model, measurements after incoherent projections are acquired from an optical system. Afterwards, the data needs to be recovered by solving an optimization problem. In the end, image processing techniques (such as various transforms) are exploited to reconstruct the original signal precisely. Probability, matrix transformation, optimization and algorithm programming are extensively used in my research, and analytical and computing skills are highly substantial.
In my opinion my background matches the job description perfectly. My previous research includes compressed sensing, real-time imaging and robotics technologies. In one project my collaborators and I applied the compressed sensing theory to Terahertz imaging aiming to build a practical CS Terahertz imaging system. I also have the experience of optimizing control algorithms of a robot arm with visual feedback. These works definitely will be beneficial to your project to develop a smart surgical imaging device.
Meanwhile, I have plentiful experience in programming, especially in Matlab and C++. By using Matlab, the proposed sensing matrices in my papers were verified to be efficient in processing MRI images. The project of optimizing the control algorithms of robot arms gave me the firsthand experience in dealing with sophisticated hardware-related C++ programming. Moreover, I am able to skilfully write scientific papers. The papers which have been published or under reviewed are listed in the attached CV.
I would really welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how I might best assist your research in this multidisciplinary project. And I very much hope to join your state-of-art lab in the prestigious Hamlyn Centre. You can reach me at the above address or by email at any time. I will be available for employment from the summer, 2012.
Thank you for your time and your consideration of my application.
Yours faithfully
