Graduate / 'Not sitting back and hoping' - Masters In Public Administration personal statement [4]
Hello everyone, thank you for the help in advance. I am about to turn in my application, below is my personal statement. Please tell me what you all think!
One or two-page personal statement. Please identify a concentration in your statement. You may use the following as an outline for your personal statement:
What is your background and academic interests?
Why did you decide to study public administration at the graduate level?
What are your professional goals?
How does an MPA degree fit into your short and long-term plans for your professional career?
"No one ever changed the world by sitting back and hoping that someone, would do something." This is what my father would say to me when I asked why we were attending municipal meetings. Admittedly, I did not enjoy these meetings as a child; I could not understand why these adults were yelling at one another. However, as I grew older I began to appreciate their passion, the belief that through teamwork and organization, these individuals can accomplish something that could not be done otherwise.
As an undergraduate I enrolled in an internship that allowed students to choose a Michigan State Representative to intern under in Lansing, Michigan. This first professional opportunity to intern within the public administration field completely altered my desired career. I was able to see first hand how public administration, at the state level works on day-to-day bases. I quickly became fascinated with public administration field, specifically organizational theory of public administration. My coursework in Human Resources Management has allowed me to gain invaluable knowledge of organizational theory, and employee relations that will aid in my understanding of public management.
The Masters in Public Administration program at the University XXX is nationally recognized for their cutting edge research performed by its faculty, and top tier curriculum. While researching the public administration field I was lead to read Ph.D XXX Book Title. Ph.D XXX book gave me a entirely new perspective on the "red tape" of public administration. I would be humbled by the opportunity to learn from Professor XXX as well as University XXX numerous nationally recognized scholars.
Through education, experiences, and effort believe that I can devote my career to improving the life of millions. My specific goals within the next year are to become involved with the management of a social program. I wish to explore and learn from all areas of administering a social program, to study why it was implemented, how it is funded, how it is managed, and most importantly how it is helping the individuals that the program was designed for. I believe that my involvement with social program complemented by education from University XXX Masters in Public Administration will allow me to become an innovative leader of the future.
