Graduate / 'well-rounded diverse individual' - statement of purpose fashion Grad school at SCAD [3]
I have attached my SOP for grad school. Please let me know what you think. The end is not really complete, any suggestions are welcome.
Life for me has always been a journey, and I admit having never been a follower, it has been much more interesting. I always dress the way I like, listen to music I like, eat the foods I like and this is what makes me an individual. There are times I feel that I stand out for this and then I find myself in places where I stand out for other reasons, completely different from this. These places are magical and the people there seem to come from another world where time and money are a whole other concept.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in art and culture and have always been fortunate enough to experience and explore different places. I owe it all to my grandmother, who has taken me under her wing and given me the opportunities that have allowed me to become the person I am today. Not only has she given me opportunities to travel but at age 11 she recognized my artistic talent and placed me in a private art class outside of school. She taught me to cook, clean and when she saw I was interested in making my own clothes at a young age, she taught me to sew. She helped me open my eyes and see all of the possibilities that life had to offer.
In a small town placed in the mountains of central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is where I not only opened my eyes, but all of my senses. This unique little puebla has been a big influence on me and the things I find intriguing. From the textures and vivid colors to the smell of the wet earth, this city stimulates all of my senses in more way than one. Emotional stimulation also comes alive when the people join together. The connection involved with the goods they have to offer is so evoking that it stuck in my conscious and as I went through life I wanted to make things too.
My second home away from home is another mountain town nuzzled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Brevard is too, a magical place, a lush green paradise where the roads twist and turn for miles and the sun glistens through the trees. Here is where I experimented with many different artistic mediums and also found myself in some of the most beautiful natural environments on earth. While experimenting and learning different methods I found my true gift of drawing the human form and realized my ability to empathize with people. After school I continued making things, drawings, paintings, handmade paper and books, on my own time and decided to work with children. One child in particular, I became very close to and learned that most people take for granted some of the simplest things in life and since have always tried to go at a slow pace and gather in everything along the way.
Because focus has not been a strong point in my life I have had the opportunity to become what I think is a very well-rounded, diverse individual. It has allowed me to explore all of the possibilities and has led me to realize what I really should be doing. Through fashion, my understanding of people and form can blossom and I can create what will allow individuals make a statement of comfort and intrigue.
