Undergraduate / 5-year study, sponsored by Big Brothers & Sisters; UT's Essay on Issue of Importance Help [2]

Choose an issue of importance to you - the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope - and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

This is my essay on the importance and significance of youth mentoring. Please give me any tips

A five-year study, sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada, found that children were more confident and had fewer behavioral problems when they had supportive mentors in their lives. Growing up with various bible study leaders, camp counselors, and ministry programs, I learned first handed the importance of youth mentoring.

The desire to serve and guide others has grown within me since I began attending Laity Lodge Youth Camp and Young Life Ministries. At the age of ten, I went to camp not sure of what to expect. Within the first few days, I was overwhelmed by the love that each counselor showed for me, and hoped that I could one day be in their position. When camp ended, my counselors continued to keep up with my everyday life while advising me through the struggles of my youth.

After my fourth year of Laity Lodge, I was introduced to Young Life, an evangelical Christian ministry seeking to lead adolescents to Jesus Christ and assist them in their growth through faith. Young Life leaders, after completing training, reach out to teenagers to build a relationship and reveal the great worth and purpose in their lives. Throughout high school, these consistent figures in my life allowed me to grow in self-confidence and self-awareness.

After attending Laity Lodge for six years, I was hired to work as a counselor last summer for three two-week consecutive sessions. Prior to arriving at camp last July, I was hesitant and unsure if I could mentor fifteen 12-year old girls, wanting nothing more than for each of them to feel genuinely loved and cared for. After three sessions, a total of forty-five campers touched my heart as I learned of all their joys, triumphs, heartaches, and disappointments.

Working as a counselor at Laity Lodge profoundly impacted my life and proved that I was capable of mentoring adolescents through patience, trust, and consistency. Upon arriving home from camp last year, I joined a Young Life small group as I began my training to become a Young Life Leader in Austin, Texas. Through the power of presence, I believe that people are able to grow interpersonally and emotionally from supportive mentors, as they are essential for positive youth development.
