Scholarship / The letter of self-introduction for KGSP scholarship - Educational Bridge [NEW]
Hello everyone! I'm applying for the Korean Government Scholarship. I wrote a letter of self-introduction and I want someone to proofread it.
I appreciate your help ^_^
Educational Bridge between Libya and South Korea
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, nor a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. That is what my parents taught me when I was a child. Self-discipline and motivation is the most two important skills I have gained from my parents. My fulfilling academic and extracurricular record is testimony to that.
During my studies from junior school to university, I have always secured one of the top positions in the class. I graduated with GPA of 93% and 91% in primary and high school respectively. Despite the obstacles I encountered in some semesters in university, I achieved a very good GPA (80.3%). In terms of extracurricular activities, I led my football team as a striker, either inside or out of school, to win different football competitions by my talent to score cracking goals. I have been, therefore, awarded with the best player in the district. Moreover, I was ranked the best member in swimming and free-diving club because of my ability to dive up to 20 meters below water surface. This successful experience made me believe of myself and inspired me more to continue achieving my goals, one of to pursue Master's and Doctoral Degree in Civil Engineering and to contribute to build my country upon my return.
In 2009, I started my undergraduate career in Tripoli University. I chose to study Civil Engineering to be able to participate to develop my country and solve the issue of irritating traffic congestion and very poor infrastructure in Libya. Over the period of five years in Civil Engineering Department, I was exposed to a stimulating academic environment, with respected professors in every field which has spurred me to do my utmost to get the Bachelor's Degree and pursue Master's in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering. I have a burning desire and great determination to pursue my academic and professional career in this field, but, unfortunately, Libya does not facilitate this program and far few opportunities to study and work at this level as the country is going through turbulent times.
After graduation in March 2015, I decided to take a year off prior to commence my professional and academic career. Throughout this period, I worked assiduously everyday to develop my English language through online education and there was a noticeable improvement especially in writing and speaking skills. At the beginning of this year, I eventually made up my mind to take the IELTS exam on mid February in order to achieve my goal which is to get at least 6.5 overall band score. It was not as easy and straightforward as I thought it would be, since there was neither a tutor nor a partner to guide and assist me. Although I encountered too much frustration over this period, I did not succumb and I kept reminding myself of my parents' words till I finally achieved my target score. However, my fascination for learning foreign languages and cultures did not stop only on English, I decided to broaden my horizons and learn another languages like French and Korean. The opportunity of KGSP came exactly in the right time and it will enable me to hit two birds with one stone. In fact, South Korea is renowned for offering a higher level of education to the students coming from abroad and that is what motivated me to apply for this scholarship.
There are some another reasons why I strongly believe that further educational studies in South Korea are essential for a person aspiring for a research career. Firstly, South Korea is one of the well-known leading countries in Geotechnical Engineering field which provides high-quality education to its students with a number of prestigious universities and it is considered one of the top countries in Asia. Secondly, studying in South Korea will open up a wide range of employment opportunities for me. Graduates from Korean universities are highly sought after by employers all over the world. In addition, the South Korean economy is extremely stable, assuring me a financially secure future following graduation. Thirdly, studying in Korea will build a bridge between Libya and South Korea and also will strengthen the relationship between the two countries, which will benefit my country economically and educationally. Therefore, I am so eager to study in South Korea and I am highly convinced that this program will help me to satisfy my requirements.
