Chevening: Leadership and Influence Question
While growing up, I have been referred to as a leader countless times by teachers and other adults I came in contact with. During my childhood I did not understand what these adults meant. However, on growing up I now understand that leaders aren't just the people with the fanciful titles but those who can exert influence. In the State Security Service, this is what I am known for. I am referred to as the officer who is the rallying point for both the younger and older generation officers. This access that I have to a large majority officers in the Service has helped me influence decisions even sometimes to the topmost management level. I see this as a rare opportunity to serve quietly and I have advanced the course of security and transparency in Nigeria through some of the operations I was involved in.
I have often sacrificed my interest for the overall good of any group I am involved with. Similarly I am always willing and ready to assist people overcome their weaknesses and become the best they can be. Over the years I have enrolled in training to develop and expose myself with relevant leadership skills at home and abroad, one of such is leadership with impact course at the Penyard House, UK.
The aforementioned leadership skills have been evident all through the periods I have served as a leader, even as far back as St. Joseph's Minor Seminary Zaria, where I served as the Library prefect in 1998. Other places where I became a leader by general consensus include the Nigerian Federation of Catholic students, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi chapter where I served as Public Relation Officer (PRO) in 2005, Nigerian Federation of Catholic Corps Anambra State branch, where I served as PRO in 2006 and most recently in India I was unanimously selected to lead a group of individuals 27 different countries which includes the Africans, Latin Americans, Caribbean, Asian and Asia-Pacific. These group of individuals usually refer to me as "the President" or "President of Nigeria", this was largely because I was able to influenced their thoughts, respect their feelings and behaviours, make them understand our vision and allow everyone contribute towards actualizing our goals.
At the moment I am in the mid-management level in my job and in 12 years I am expected to be among the top management, however I aspire for greater responsibilities. While my organization may limit my potentials because of the number of people I will influence my State constituency afford me an amazing opportunity to impact millions of Nigerians, therefore Chevening Scholarship will place at a vantage position for the challenge that lies ahead.
I am craving to do more, to deliver selfless leadership and influence my society in order to fill the leadership deficit in Africa and in particular Nigeria. An offer of Chevening Scholarship will not only expose me but help me advance my horizon and provide an enviable platform to actualize my goals.
