Essay- Leadership and Influence Question

"Influencing others is one aspect of successful leadership, but I have experienced in my life that it is very important to be influenced by an ideology to be able to influence the others.

Just like any child born in a common middle class Pakistani family, life meant for me to concentrate on studies and take responsibility of entire family after completing studies. One critical aspect of sense of responsibility was missing in my intellect till I reached the age of 16, which was to influence the society beyond only my family.

In summer break after my SSC exams in 2006, I was influenced by the idea of supporting education for underprivileged children during the course of speaking English class at Hashoo foundation. Later in my life, it became a primary belief.

After joining Engro, I kept volunteering for betterment of society through different initiatives. Seeing my commitment to create impact on society, I was made secretary of "WeConnect" committee in 2016. Here I created a chance to to touch the lives of underprivileged children, later, it became a hallmark of my devotion to this cause. I lead a team of 06 people to develop an educational program for 200 underprivileged children from troubled areas in Karachi (Layari, Kati Pahari and Orangi Town) spanning over three months. "PenSail" was the name of project we came up with. Our team collaborated with a local development organization to custom design the syllabus for this program focusing on violence rejection. Along with chairman of "WeConnect" committee, I presented the program to CEO and secured 4 Million PKR from discretionary fund. "Pensail" was launched in May-2016. After 03 months of hard work by all the participants, it successfully completed in Aug-2016. 30 university students were awarded fellowships as mentors. 200 young children were taught science, arts and most importantly how to bring a positive change in society by rejecting violence. I see it as a change for at least 200 families. This program was dubbed as the best program in VOPAK world (67 Companies) in Rotterdam in Nov-2016.

As chairman of "WeConnect" committee this year, I lead a team of 07 people to develop a program that would empower 45 underprivileged women and would enable them earn the skills necessary to compete in modern market. Rather than going for conventional livelihood, I am determined to provide them IT related skills and equipment. After I presented the proposal to management, they have decided to double the scale of the project and have spared funding of 6.5 million PKR. To make sure the effectiveness of this 10 month long program, I have convinced the management to provide internship to top 10 performers of this program. Program is bound to start by Mid November this year.

I am determined to provide chances to underprivileged people just like I was provided back in 2006, and I am hopeful that they continue in believing in the ideology of giving back the society what society has provided them in first place."

Regards and Cheers
