Graduate / MED SCHOOL PERSONAL STATEMENT INTRO [2]
So far I just have this intro:
When you ask someone close, a family member or a friend, to describe you with three different words out of the blue (which you would not normally do unless you are writing a personal statement), you could get something you never have imagined of. This happened to me as I sought the help of my friends and family to come up with word that they would use to describe me. To set up a comparison, I came up with the descriptive words myself: responsible, resilient, and empathetic. As expected, these same words were also used by the ones who responded to my request. But in that word bank, there were two that caught me by surprise, which were the words 'confident' and 'passionate.' Initially, I was simply flattered by this surprise. Then I started to ponder what about my actions had persuaded others to think that I am confident or passionate.
Upon reflection, I believe that my confidence and passion is revealed through the process of how I overcame the cultural and academic challenges. In deciding to jump into opportunities for learning English, I gained confidence in myself for surviving through new experiences. To endure through difficult science classes, I relied on my passion in medicine as the driving force behind my resilience. Even though there were moments of doubts in my ability to get through the long journey of becoming a physician, I never gave up. Instead, I chose to go to Uganda as a volunteer and work in NYC as a Research Coordinator where I further developed essential character traits including confidence, passion, resilience and empathy. Throughout these experiences, I never let go of my dream to become a physician with the determination to utilize my talents in serving those suffering with physical and mental distress.
please let me know what you think!
