Graduate / Statement of Purpose for Meng in Chemical Engineeing National University of Singapore [2]

Hello,
This is my first time applying to a master program, and thanks so much for suggestions on my statement of pupose.

the 'Volcanic Explosion'

Many high school students always face a problem when they apply for the college, that is what is their interested field and what major should be selected. However, it was a quite easy problem with me, because at that time I had decided to choose chemistry and was absorbed by the various experimental phenomenon. And it was all attributed to a special visit to the XXXX's Chemical Experimental Work Station.

It was in 2014 when my high school took students to the work station to let us have a general idea about what researchers do in their daily life and visit the chemistry department. And volunteers in the lab showed us various experiments and explain their basic principle. I was totally amazed by the experiments and the most memorable experiment was the 'Volcanic Explosion'.

The experiment used ammonium dichromate as the reactant and it was lit by a magnesium ribbon. During the exothermic reaction, sparks would be seen and it would produce the chromic oxide, so it looked like a small volcano was exploding and it produced smoke and fire, which was very surprising for me. In brief, the world of chemistry was so mysterious to me and I have made a decision to major in Chemistry and stepped into the laboratory to discover the unknown and do what I was interested in.

After two years' studies in the chemistry department, I joined the group of Associate Professor XXX and started the research life in the laboratory in junior year. At first, curiosity and freshness were the main themes of the research, because it was the first time that I had access to chemical research and did different experiments. However, after several weeks I felt puzzled about the experiments and the content of the research: what's the meaning of the research program and why certain experiments can help us solve the problem? With the guidance of Professor XXX, I read lots of articles and slowly understood the principle of the research and fully enjoyed the process of discovering the unknown through my efforts. In the two-year research life, I had published a paper of detecting short-chain fatty acids using hollow fiber membrane on the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis as the second writer and had independently finished two research programs.

What's more, my abilities of experiments, thesis writing, and critical thinking had been enhanced. Through the two-year research life in Analytical Chemistry laboratory, I had a detailed understanding about scientific research and realized the significance of persistence and cooperation. For example, to achieve a better enrichment factor of target analytes in microbial degradation fluid, I had tried gold nanoparticles and four different kinds of organic solvents until I found the most suitable supporting liquid membrane. When I tried to synthesize gold nanoparticles through the method introduced by the article, it was difficult for me to identify whether I had successfully prepared gold nanoparticles based on the current experimental equipment in our lab. To solve the problem, our team cooperated with other laboratories and UV-visible absorption spectrum from organic chemistry lab was used for analyzing the nanoparticles.

Graduating from the university with a BSc, I become a chemistry teacher in a junior high school. Though the job is meaningful, I still can't give up the dream of doing scientific research and hope to change my life, so coming to NUS for further study is my first choice. I am fascinated by the excellent research environment of NUS and the researching areas such as Environmentally Benign Processing and Sustainability are also my interested research fields, because when I led a team of 3 people to compete in a Scientific and Technological Works Contest, the key research point of the project was to detect pesticides Cyromazine and its degradation product Melamine based on electromembrane extraction in the river samples. Through this program, I realized the significance of chemical engineering in the area of environmental sustainability and water processing.

I would like to attend the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the National University of Singapore because the research of membrane and sustainable water production really attract me. After reading the article by XXX et al., I find that it deserves to contribute myself to the project because it has great potential benefits to the environment and water circulation. The better understanding and experimental experience of the membrane in my undergraduate study support me to have the ability to study and do the research in the NUS.

If I get the opportunity to come to NUS and start the master's study, I'll devote myself to doing research and using all my knowledge and experimental skill to fulfill my dream and do scientific research in my interested field.
