never give up on people

Growing up, I was surrounded by older people who were never afraid to speak up on what they believed in. It was a stimulating and intimidating environment to grow up in. The environment sparked my desire to be assertive about my beliefs and values. Among my peers, I learnt how to lead without being a bully or obnoxious. Personally, leadership is all about making sacrifices with people's best interests at heart. It is about finding out and making sure people's skills are maximised to their fullest potential.

I started to understand my role as a leader with my younger siblings. Growing up with them, I realised that they closely watched and mimicked everything I did. This made me understand the influence I had on their actions. My leadership and influence in their lives were put to the test when we lost our dad. I became their anchor and helped steer them away from trouble. This was my first real test of leadership because my siblings were angry and resentful of what I represented. However, I kept on pushing them until they realised that I had their best interests at heart.

In the university, I worked on several theatre productions. On each set I was on, I made sure I went above and beyond the tasks that were set for me. On the theatre production of 'The Vagina Monologues', I became the de-facto leader for the cast. When the cast had a problem, I stepped in to find ways to resolve it to make the production happen.

After my university education, I spent a year as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Ghana. As an assistant, I supervised students on their various projects. I even had the opportunity to teach classes on a couple of occasions. I helped to ensure that every student project was done to the best of their ability. The year I spent as a teaching assistant put me in a unique leadership position. It gave me insight on how to lead a group towards a specific goal.

Currently, I work as an independent content producer. In my current position, I head different productions. I am in charge of the crew at every point of production. Anytime I work for a company, I make sure I shape their creative language. I work with teams to make sure that projects are done. This position helps me hone my leadership skills. Also, it has made me aware of the type of leader I am.

To summarise, leaders create chances to change their society and country and influence a group towards goal achievement. As a young leader, I have understood that the mark of a great leader is never giving up on people. I believe the Chevening scholarship will move me forward and help me acquire new knowledge. It is that knowledge I will bring back to my country to lead the charge on developing quality films and content for the creative industry.
