Scholarship / CHEVENING POST-STUDY PLAN ESSAY - Infrastructure Development [2]

Hi I need your input on my Chevening post study essay. Thanks in advance!

I will continue my career in the public sector

The direction of the Government of Indonesia (GoI) still places infrastructure development as a national focus for the next few years. Therefore, after having a Master's degree, I will continue my career in the public sector, especially in infrastructure development.

The latest GoI important plan of infrastructure development is to accelerate renewable energy infrastructure development. There must be a reform in current energy-related policies to attract investors to invest in Indonesia to support the acceleration. Knowing this, I will focus my immediate post-study plan to expand my current consultancy practice in my current employer, XXX, to energy infrastructure and help the acceleration plan. Leveraging my network and my knowledge in public policy and public finance, I will manage to take part in this acceleration initiative by advising the relevant stakeholders, such as the state-owned companies, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resource, and Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs. This plan is also related to the UK's Indonesia Prosperity Fund Regulatory Reform Programme. The programme's interventions aim to support reforms to the regulatory environment which will increase incentives for domestic and international (including the UK) firms to invest in Indonesia. As a Chevening alumnus, I will support this programme by also collaborating with Regulatory Delivery International, part of the UK's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, which has implemented the programme since 2018. Together, we will support GoI's regulatory reform priorities.

Supported by Chevening global network, I aim to enrich my knowledge by joining the XXXX as a consultant. I will focus on managing and delivering its advisory services, specifically in the infrastructure sector. I will work alongside global infrastructure companies, financial institutions and governments to design and implement solutions, such as enabling public-private partnerships and improving the business environment for capital investment to boost infrastructure development. This experience will allow me to learn end-to-end infrastructure delivery in other countries and bring back the lessons learned to Indonesia.

In the long-term, using my expertise gained from local and international service, I plan to serve as the special staff to the Deputy of XXX under the Coordinating Ministry for XXX. As the special staff, I will directly involve in the policies development related to infrastructure acceleration programme and monitor the policies implementation. I will coordinate other ministries that are important for infrastructure development, such as the Ministry of XXX and Ministry of XXX. Besides, I will also collaborate with the Coordinating Ministry XXX to develop a strategy on how to increase Indonesia's attractiveness to global investors, who hold a vital role in nation-building through infrastructure.

Overall, my Master's degree in the UK will help me develop networks and collaborations that contribute to Indonesia's regulatory reform and infrastructure development agenda. This is in line with the UK's initiative in Indonesia on regulatory reform, that will, in turn, strengthen the UK-Indonesia bilateral relationship.

Scholarship / Leading by identifying issues and implementing impact driven solutions to incubate change [5]

The leadership traits can be shown by an act of identifying problem, initiating solution, influencing others to follow the solution, delegating tasks to the right person, delivering impacts to other.

In your essay, I can see the identifying problem and initiating solution parts. But the influencing part is underdeveloped. For example, when you say you pitched the idea to the senior management, how important was it to get their approval? What was your approach to convince them? Was there any hesitation from them at first? How did you manage to convince other people to help you with your campaign? You can definitely elaborate more on the conflict and how you resolve it in this part.

Another example is when you say that you negotiate the device price. Instead of saying that you have effective negotiation skill, show it by describing why you need to reduce the cost. Was there any reluctance from the vendor? How did you convince them to reduce the cost?

Choose 2-3 anecdotes within your campaign process that have the most prominent conflicts/problems and show how you handle it and lead into your success.

Scholarship / CHEVENING LEADERSHIP ESSAY - Self Driven & Empathetic Leader (Need Input) [4]

a self-driven and empathetic leader

Hi all,

I am applying to Chevening Scholarship this year and this is my leadership essay. The question is as follow: Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

I really appreciate if you can give honest opinion about my essay so I can improve it. Thank you.

My ability to identify problem, initiate solutions, take an active role to implement the solution as well as influence other people to involve in the process defines me as a self-driven and empathetic leader.

In my first year as XXX consultant, I was assigned to a tight deadline project. After two weeks of project, it was clear that the team has no firm direction. Considering the deadline, wasting another weeks in confusion was unfavorable. I communicated this observation to my manager. Unfortunately, he did not see any problem and insisted to run the project his way. To convince him, I initiatively crafted detailed project plan, identified critical milestones, and work division. I communicated the plan to my manager. He finally realized the nearing critical milestone to complete. He agreed with the plan and asked me to co-lead other team members. At first, the team members were not convinced with the plan since I was less experienced than other members. Instead of pushing the plan, I involved them in discussion on how to make it more feasible. I invited their opinion so they also acknowledged the plan as theirs, not mine. As a result, the project was completed on time with client's satisfactory remarks. I got double promotion in my first year joining the firm and got more exposure in other projects.

The purpose of a leader is not only getting the things done, but also developing people. My experience in XXX taught me the importance of empathy in leading people. My junior team mate was a new joiner whom I supervised. He captivated the team by his ability to learn quickly, resiliency to measure up with challenging tasks, and enthusiasm. He was a promising member, until one day, I noticed that he lost his enthusiasm. His work performance started to deteriorate. I initiated a one-on-one discussion with him. At first, he was defensive and reluctant to share his struggle. Therefore, I encouraged him by sharing my struggle at that time. Knowing that I too was struggling, he opened up and shared his childhood serious trauma that haunted him. The trauma started to negatively affect his professional life. I encouraged him to consult to psychologist. It was hard to convince him to visit the psychologist so I put myself in his shoes. I learned that mental health was uncommon topic for him. It was understandable since for most Indonesians, visiting psychologist is for "crazy" people. Moreover, the consultation fee is costly. I introduced him to colleague who did therapy with psychologist to open his mind that seeking professional help is indispensable. I reached out to my psychologist friend who introduced a NGO which offer low-fee consultation. I committed to help him finance his consultation if he committed to do it regularly. He finally agreed to do consultation. After several sessions, he got better. The trauma was not fully healed yet but he started to regain his enthusiasm at work. He stepped up his career game and took an opportunity to join a training that elevated his data analytics skill. He became a valuable asset to the organization.

I believe that self-drive and empathy are the traits needed by the future leader. By becoming a Chevening scholar, I will connect with a network of leaders who will enrich my leadership skills and prepare me to become a better leader.
