Letters / My interest in Biotechnology - Motivation letter [3]

My Fascination with Biotechnology

The subject of Biotechnology intrigued me the day it was introduced as a part of a curriculum in my senior secondary school. Biotechnology being the broad area of biology utilizing the living systems and organisms for improving the healthcare and other realms of life have been one of the interesting aspects for me to learn more since I choose it as a part of my curriculum. Biotechnology is the field of future which at it's this growing stage is providing with beneficial presents to the individuals as well as to the society, vastly in terms of curing diseases. That way a lot more can be expected in the coming years.

There are lots of problems around us which requires immediate action to resolve them and provide up with better solutions. The majority of these problems involve the disturbances in the healthcare of the society. Being a member of the society and a biotechnology student I want to be an element of usefulness/innovation in this field. I want to dedicate all my mental abilities to serve mankind.

For my final year project, I completed my dissertation from Medical University in Biochemistry Department. The techniques and other things which I learned upon completing my project included all those work involved in Molecular biology; for instance DNA extraction from blood samples, Amplification of the OCT1 gene by PCR, analysis of DNA and Amplified gene products by gel electrophoresis. Other parts of my training also included DNA, RNA and protein extraction from a Blood sample, Tissue and Cell lines. Other than that I also learned some immunological techniques such as Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA), Gene expression level analysis by RT-PCR.

To further have an industrial experience in my pre-final year of undergraduate studies, beverages Manufacturing Company as a summer intern. I worked in Microbiology Lab and Quality control department there. I learned the microbial test on the water treatment plant, other than that the training also included other safety and quality tests. This industrial experience was enriching, allowed me to view directly some of the theory lessons I studied in my course in a practical manner.

From these internships, I have got a glimpse of the rigorousness of lab work along with the anxiety of expectation, the pure elation of getting positive results. This has further strengthened my aim and desire to be part of the laboratory where the research is performed and the line between the known and unknown information meets.

The coursework provided to me in my undergraduate studies at University has evoked my keen interests in Molecular Biology and Immunology especially in the techniques involved in the analysis of things. The practical work and theory classes provided to us were in a very systematic manner which aroused my keen interests in observation of results. Further, it also helped me in actually applying the techniques learned in my lectures in a practical manner.

To further get an Industrial and research exposure, I have also visited some of the Institutes and Universities as educational trips from our departments. These visits helped us having a great understanding of good research as well as giving a good experience of an actual working area.

My ultimate aim is to utilize the knowledge and training which I received during my Undergraduate studies to work in the research projects in an integrated degree for PhD. I need to complete my research as a doctorate degree with some useful topic that will add some value to human life. The topic which I want to include as in my PhD programme in solving some health care issues prevailing around us in the present time.

Now-a days a very renowned word "Cancer" as a disease is present in the world. This is one of the areas which needs effective treatment in this era, widespread in every corner of the world. The problem of curing this disease needs early diagnostic machines which can differentiate early to late onsets and response non-responsive patients.

Looking at this perspective, I need to widen my horizons, receive both the training and guidance. I believe that I will gain this just through associating with your university. I feel that the laboratory facilities that are designed at your prestigious institute allow students to gain good exposure to both the theoretical and practical side of the biotechnology research.

I sincerely hope I will be able to give back in research as much as I gain in my knowledge under the guidance of experts. I hope that this statement of purpose will merit me a place in your institute.
