Scholarship / I always wanted to be a leader. The values and beliefs you hold strongly to - with examples [2]

Describe, in less than 300 words, the values and beliefs you hold strongly to.

I always wanted to be a leader. It is no title, no occupation. Yet, leaders are needed in this world. Leaders translate a vision into reality. I believe that what distinguishes one from the other is the beliefs and values one holds strongly.

A leader is one who speaks last and acts first. The ability to restrain yourself from voicing your opinions until everyone has spoken, letting others achieve the satisfaction of being heard, giving people the feeling that they have contributed to the discussion. Speaking last gives us the benefit of hearing what other people think, before rendering our own. Simply understand what they mean and why they have the opinion that they have. Not just what they are saying. It is a value and skill I closely grasp and believe deeply.

As a Model United Nations experienced delegate, not only am I challenged to be an exceptional researcher on topics of world issues but also a leader who listens to others. That is how I won my Most Outstanding Delegate honors on my first Model United Nations competition. Only speaking when it mattered and listening to other people, taking notes of their stances, understanding what they are looking for in the council, and establishing a common ground that solves every delegate's problems, helped me become a better delegate, a better leader.

Unquestionable integrity is also a belief I hold firmly. Always being honest to oneself and choosing the right over the easy, even when no one is noticing. I believe that the smartest and brightest beings must possess this particular belief in themselves to succeed. If there is no integrity, a strong foundation of relationships built on trust cannot be achieved.

I entered a STEM competition back in 2019. It was run by Bogor Agricultural University using a test format in which participants advanced from the main rounds to the semifinals, and onto the finals. I remembered clearly there's no supervision from the organizing committee that prevented students from cheating. Other students are doing it openly, some even admitted getting help from their teachers. Temptation, lots. But, me and my partner decided to use our brainpower, all the information we had available in our arsenal, to do it honestly. We succeeded and entered the semifinals, although fell short on the final rounds.

The values and beliefs we clench defines who we are. The values and beliefs I held, especially that of becoming a good listener, and having integrity, have propelled me to become a better person and a successful one. I believe that it will prepare me for whatever challenges awaiting me at NTU.
