Graduate / A statement of purpose for masters in computer science for UIUC. [2]

So just wanted any advice regarding the SOP I plan to present for my masters degree, I am a bit concerned as I feel my main weakness is that I have to write more about how the degree would assist me as well as I unware as to what would be a good word limit for an SOP( I know that universities set limits, but some of them which I am applying do not have such, any reccommendations for the same?)

statement of purpose

Imagine if someone were to pose a question to you, "What is the most crucial viewpoint any engineer must consider when working on their projects?" You could say it would be to lower costs or maximize the number of people utilizing the device, one point rarely considered is accessibility for everyone regardless of their impairments.

My ventures into the field of inclusive engineering began when my high school held a field trip to the local school for the visually impaired, where we interacted with the students and had a charity to obtain several "BrailleMe" devices for the students. The joy of these students using these devices was a core memory of mine that remains to this day, and I resolved to become an engineer. I began my undergraduate career by joining several clubs like ACM as well as an intra-college club called Hackerspace that prioritized FOSS and upheld the accessibility principles held by ACM in every project we endorsed as a club, holding several events such as Hacknight which was our attempt to push students to contribute during "Hacktoberfest" and to learn something new in the 48 hours they had. Of course, I never faltered in furthering my education in the field of engineering, having received several scholarships and maintaining a relatively high GPA. After persevering through several hardships I obtained an Internship at "Thinkerbell Labs" a company that specializes in creating braille literary devices.

I am currently working on a research paper wherein I deal with Distributed systems, as It is a field that I am also enamoured by besides my interest. For now, we are trying to establish several patterns for Jaeger tracing and obtain quantifiable data regarding performance based on the type of database. Having set up a clear format in a Kubernetes cluster, anyone can test how their data would react with various backends, and optimize it for certain metrics. Scalability is one of the most important issues in today's world, and the project aims to make it easier to obtain. This blended nicely into my becoming a teaching assistant for the database systems and web technologies courses, the former to enhance my own career growth with systems and the latter to educate my juniors in the lesson of ensuring systems they build are accessible to people with disabilities.

During my internship at Thinkerbell Labs, I had the invaluable opportunity to work closely with a team of dedicated engineers who shared my passion for making technology accessible to individuals with visual impairments. The experience at Thinkerbell Labs solidified my commitment to inclusive engineering. I had firsthand experience working with talented individuals at APH, on the flagship product "Polly" which provided me with experience in embedded technologies and creating accessible sites. When I complete my Master's degree, I aim to pursue a career with organizations such as APH and Humanware, where I believe I can channel my creativity and unwavering determination to make a meaningful impact. By the end of the degree, I intend to help the prevalent scenario by developing a system that can combine the current sea of devices that assist disabled individuals.

The Masters in Computer Science program at UIUC presents a unique opportunity for me to delve deeper into the field and to cater to individuals so often forgotten. The university is well known for its strides in research capabilities, state-of-the-art facilities, and esteemed faculty members making it an ideal institution to pursue my academic and professional aspirations. Moreover, the inclusive community at UIUC aligns perfectly with my values, as shown by the established research areas of "Artificial intelligence" and "Computers and education". I am looking forward to helping and setting up an RSO to propagate the ideals of inclusive education and make strides in the field to help people with other disabilities besides visual impairments.
