Undergraduate / Nanyang Technological University Scholarship Essay - Value and beliefs [2]
Describe, in less than 300 words, the values and beliefs you hold strongly to. Please provide examples of how you have demonstrated these in your actions.
I was a kind of person who listen to what other people say and swallow them profoundly, but now self-faith and self-respect are the two guiding principles that shape my decisions and actions.
It all started when I decided to compete in the National Physics Olympiad. As a female, I encountered discouragement as this field is known to be male-dominated which is reinforced by the statistical data-only one female had managed to represent Indonesia in the International Physics Olympiad. People believe that female lack problem solving skills and it makes them unqualified for subjects like physics and math; rather, they belong to the "milder subjects" such as economics and geography. I used to believe that this was never the case. Problem solving ability is honed, not determined by one's gender.
However, this faith wasn't strong enough to help me face the woes and be tough. I began regretting my decision and doubting my ability to the point that practising became too daunting. Eventually, I fulfilled my own worst fear-I failed in my very last year, unable to secure a medal in the crucial national round.
What I learned from this experience is focusing on other's people negativity is entirely futile and no one is capable of defining our own worth. Success is achieved by concentrating on self-improvement and having faith in our ability to achieve our goals.
Since the beginning, I long to contribute to the field of technology. I chose to compete in physics olympiads because I wanted to build strong foundation in physics and sharpen my critical thinking skills before jumping into the engineering field. This vision will endure regardless of my failure. I am determined to join NTU Electrical Engineering as it is always an essential need for me rather than a mere dream. This program is undoubtedly one of the best program in the world, renowned for its exceptional education consisted of robust curriculum and its significant contribution through the advancement of technology. NTU also offers a wide range of student clubs to enhance networking opportunities and enrich students' knowledge. I am looking forward to join the Student Union Council and Garage@EEE to refine my organizational skill, bring my ideas to fruition, acquire technical skill training, and explore entrepreneurship opportunities.
Upon completing my studies, I want to use my skills to develop prosthetic technology with advanced control systems and sensors that allows the users to perform everyday activities effortlessly. This prosthesis incorporates robotics and AI to precisely adjust the limb's movements according to the user's intentions, as well as to calculate forces for seamless and natural movements dynamics. With my sheer determination, I believe I will be able to become a student of NTU and pursue my dreams
