Scholarship / ERASMUS MUDUS SCHOLARSHIPS ON EUROPEAN PUBLIC HEALTH MASTER. Europubhealth+ [2]
Please help me to review my SOP for ERASMUS MUDUS SCHOLARSHIPS Europubhealth+.
Nigeria is the second-highest burdened country globally with HIV, with adolescents and young adults constituting a significant proportion of new infections. The effects of the HIV epidemic in Africa wade heavily, and young people are at greater risk. Diagnosed with HIV in early adolescence and living with it for over 12 years, I have experienced firsthand the struggles that members of populations structurally predisposed to vulnerabilities face. My personal experience and deep commitment to addressing health disparities among young people living with HIV alongside continued public health challenges confronting my Republic fosters my unalloyed commitment to public health.
A double degree in Europubhealth+ drew my interest, which allows dual specializations, broadening expertise across different health systems and research methodologies in a short timeframe with diverse academic approaches across two universities, enriching understanding of global public health challenges. My deep passion for youth leadership inclusion in public health decision-making and policy formulation has prompted me to choose the Leadership in European Public Health track for my second year at the University of Maastricht as a youth leader dedicated to advocating for young PLHIV rights, ensuring their inclusion in health interventions. This specialization will strengthen my experience in youth leadership and advocacy, equipping me with the necessary skills to lead initiatives that drive policy changes for marginalized populations, improve my leadership competencies and be prepared for influential positions in determining health policies. For my Year 2 dissertation, I am particularly interested in exploring "the importance of the youth leadership in public health decisions and policies", specifically concerning HIV and adolescent health, revealing my dedication towards advocating for the rights of marginalized populations.
I have explored my passion for public health by Pursuing a B.Sc. in Community Health with a CGPA of 4.50/5.00 at Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria. As an undergraduate, my final thesis which was titled "Assessment of Utilization of Peer Support Program and Its Association to ART Adherence Among Young People Living with HIV in Ogun State, Nigeria," increased my capacity on how research is being carried out, meanwhile driving home the necessity for youth leadership roles in public health intervention.
Working with the Lagos state primary health care board as a community health officer exposed me to knowledge in health education, disease outbreak surveillance and control, and collaborating with NGOs and health authorities, also presently serving as the coordinator for the Association of Positive Youth Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria Ogun chapter engaging in community service impacting the lives of PLHIV through awareness, health intervention programs as well as youth empowerment programs. In addition, I volunteered with the Ogun State Ministry of Health, Department of Public Health, where I participated in the Nigeria AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) 2018; the survey focused on measuring HIV prevalence and viral load suppression across Nigeria to guide health policy and track progress in combating HIV. All these have equipped me with the necessary communication, human relations and research skills to fit into the program's diverse environment. Moreover, I was privileged to attend the International AIDS Conference 2024 in Munich, Germany, as an educational scholarship fully funded delegate, making a significant gain in my global health view. In addition to public health.
After a successful master's program, I will be well-equipped with the required knowledge and skills I intend to return to Nigeria equipped with the skills and global insights needed to address critical public health challenges, particularly concerning youth and HIV. My aim goal is to work with government agencies and NGOs to implement youth-centred health interventions and lead programs that foster youth leadership in public health, ultimately influencing policy changes at both the national and international levels.
