Beloved Mathematics
Math has been woven into my life as naturally as breathing-I cannot imagine a day without it. I was barely awake in Geography and History classes and would leap in excitement as if I were possessed when the bell rang for Math. I became proficient in Math largely because of my determination and inspiration.
When I was in 10th grade, I remember being inspired by my Math teacher explaining that the cognitive framework it takes to succeed in Mathematics is the foundation upon which everything we could ever want to do in our lives is built: our aspiring careers, our future spouse relationship, and even simple communications. It was a moment of clarity-a realization that Mathematics wasn't merely about numbers; it was an indispensable tool for understanding and interacting with the world. I am impressed with how easily I can calculate financial transactions in the supermarket, in the petrol station when filling up fuel, and when using payment systems to send money to loved ones. Surely, Mathematics lies at the heart of our modern world. Math underpins the technological infrastructure behind computers, smartphones, and even the internet that people use regularly. In addition to this, it gave the world modern medicine enabling doctors to use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines to create detailed images of the body. Fundamental principles such as Finite Element Analysis and Fourier Analysis have played and continue to play a huge role in the field of engineering and architecture. All these facts further emphasize just how important this subject is to all of us. I always count my reps when I work out, set a 10-minute timer when cooking porridge to help me cook properly, and even use a heart rate monitor, which uses Math to help me monitor my heartbeat to prevent hypertension. For the above-mentioned reasons and many others, I am inspired to excel in Mathematics.
I was hardly ever good at Mathematics in my lower grades, contrary to what my parents and peers would tell you about me. I first showed interest in Math in the 6th grade and no one ever believed I could do anything about my poor grades. The lessons taught in class were too fast for me to comprehend and everybody would laugh every time I stumbled on problems they thought were too simple to fail. My grades slowly declined until they hit an unfortunate low. Admittedly, I understood Math's significance to our lives and I knew I had to do better. I started staying up at night studying with the class 'Math Geniuses,' asking them to quiz me before they went to sleep. I asked my father to teach me Math in his free time, and my parents, seeing my commitment, decided to help out by finding a tutor for me. I was able to ask all the questions that had to do with Mathematics and from a daunting subject, Math became a fun activity I loved doing. The passion became so intense, that I started seeing numbers and symbols regularly every time I went to sleep. I was in love. One thing led to the next, and I started improving my Math grades until my teachers noticed my growth. The dreaded D became a C and then became a B. After relentless perseverance-asking my math Teacher tough questions even risking class punishment because of my frequent visits to the staff office-I was eventually able to bump my grade up from a B to an A. My dedication to succeed in Math was a primary determinant of my success in the subject.
