Letters / Motivation Letter for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Image Processing and Computer Vision AI [2]
I had always wanted to learn more about computers and related technologies. However, growing up, my access to it was almost non-existent. So, I decided to study for a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering to gain all-around exposure to it. I successfully graduated with First Class and managed to build a 5+ year career as a software developer. Now, AI/ML intrigues me in the same manner and entices my curiosity with its potential to revolutionize societies and improve people's lives, such as automating processes in healthcare or enhancing user experience in consumer applications. I am particularly inspired by how deep learning algorithms can interpret visual data, opening possibilities for autonomous systems and medical imaging. With an aim to make a meaningful impact, I am applying for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Image Processing and Computer Vision AI.
My undergraduate studies at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, affiliated with Anna University, Chennai, India, provided a solid theoretical foundation. During my coursework, I delved deeply into algorithms and their applications to real-world problems. With strong programming and mathematical skills, I excelled in my lab courses, scoring top grades. This blend of theory and hands-on practice in the lab cemented my understanding and ignited a fervent passion for the digital realm. My final semester project, which focused on optimizing product delivery for e-commerce platforms, honed my problem-solving skills and sparked my interest in leveraging technology for societal benefits. Apart from studies, I was also an active member of the Computer Society of India and took part in volunteering work at various department events and programs.
Driven by the belief that theory alone is insufficient, I sought professional experience to deepen my understanding of software development. Over the past five years, I have worked at Micro Focus and Chulo Solutions, developing web and mobile applications using frameworks such as Angular, React Native, React, Node, and Rails, and managing their efficient deployment and timely delivery, ensuring client satisfaction.
At Micro Focus (contracted through Quess Corp), Bangalore, India, I contributed to the development and maintenance of Zen Service Desk, an IT services management system. My responsibilities included redeveloping the UI, integrating APIs, code refactoring, and improving load times, all while following Test Driven Development and Agile methodologies. At Chulo Solutions, Lalitpur, Nepal, I have been involved in various projects, including social media, NFT blockchain, ride booking, and job portals. Implementing real-time messaging features using WebRTC and integrating in-app payment systems are among my notable achievements. Additionally, I have single-handedly managed large-scale deployments of apps in the AWS cloud, utilizing several resources like VPC, EC2, SES, S3 Buckets, Load Balancer, ASG, etc. In short, I have experience in using complex frameworks, managing large-scale deployments, and learning new technologies quickly, with a goal to contribute to research-driven applications in computer vision.
My professional journey has taught me the importance of well-structured, optimized code and effective collaboration. Guiding young professionals and working with diverse teams from Nepal, India, and Japan have further honed my collaborative skills, which are crucial for research and development. I have successfully led projects from requirements gathering, architecture design, and feature implementation all the way to deployment and product delivery. While my formal experience in AI/ML is limited, I am confident that with my major development experience, I can quickly grasp AI/ML concepts and make meaningful contributions to research and projects.
The ongoing "AI-driven early disease detection through radiomics and deep learning models" research has caught my interest. The research's focus on using advanced image processing techniques and artificial intelligence to analyze subtle patterns in medical images that are often invisible to the human eye is particularly exciting and a great humanitarian effort. In addition, ongoing work to achieve full autonomy in vehicles, as well as in industrial production, has also caught my attention. The EMJM in IPCVAI, with its comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum, aligns perfectly with my career aspirations. Courses in Machine and Deep Learning, High-Performance Computing, and Visual Signal Processing will build upon my foundational knowledge and professional experience, enabling me to tackle complex challenges through a deep understanding. The program stands out for its unique structure, offering exposure to diverse academic settings and innovative labs across Europe. I am particularly drawn to the opportunity to learn under renowned faculty in computer vision and the prospect of contributing to cutting-edge research in visual data processing. I am confident that the cultural diversity and vibrant student community within the EMJM IPCVAI program will greatly enrich my growth, both personally and professionally. Studying and conducting research in this environment will equip me with a solid foundation in AI and ML while enabling me to explore specialized fields like image processing and computer vision in depth.
