Letters / Motivation for PhD: Research Academic Journey [2]
Research has always been a driving force behind my academic journey, and my ultimate goal is to become a researcher. From my secondary school days, my focus was on getting into an IIT, knowing it would provide me with the best platform to explore science and its applications. When I joined IIT B, it opened my eyes to the excitement and broader impact of research. Participating in events like Techfest and Mood Indigo exposed me to diverse research activities and planted the seed of curiosity that ultimately led me to pursue higher education.
After completing my bachelor's, I was determined to pursue a master's degree. IIT K gave me that opportunity, and I entered the program with a clear idea of the academic path I wanted to take. This focus was evident in the courses I chose and the dissertation topic I selected, which allowed me to perform original research. My master's project focused on analyzing a performance indicator, the Admiralty Constant, to determine a ship's speed loss. This experience was both challenging and rewarding, reaffirming my interest in research. I realized that learning and discovering new things are where I truly thrive-it's the one pursuit that energizes me, no matter how hard I work.
During my master's, I was introduced to your work in a very impactful way. I referenced one of your papers, 'XYZ,' in my dissertation. That research inspired me and sparked my interest in working with you. Conversations with my advisor further reinforced my positive perception of the university, solidifying my desire to pursue my PhD there. When I saw the PhD position advertised on the university website, it felt like a perfect fit. The project aligned closely with the work I had done during my master's, particularly in performance analysis, and also incorporated elements I had been eager to explore further, such as data analysis and machine learning.
Although I did not use machine learning in my master's project, it was the logical next step in the research process, and I had already begun exploring its applications. The fact that this project involves both data analysis and monitoring performance excites me immensely. It aligns with my skills and interests while offering the chance to work on a critical problem: optimizing vessel maintenance schedules to enhance performance.
To understand the project better, I researched the performance indicator further. I delved into papers and the doctoral thesis of Dr. P, as well as other relevant literature. From my exploration, I learned about the uncertainties associated with this indicator and the efforts to reduce bias, as outlined in Dr. P's work. While significant progress has been made, I see room for further improvement in refining the methodology and minimizing uncertainty. This aligns perfectly with my interests and skills in data preprocessing, statistical analysis, and problem-solving.
Joining this PhD program at your university represents an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in sustained research on a topic that excites me. I am eager to contribute to advancing performance optimization and to collaborate with leading researchers in this field. The structured environment, intellectual freedom, and high-impact work that a PhD offers are the perfect avenues for me to realize my potential and drive meaningful advancements in marine technology
