Undergraduate / Open-minded and empathic - UBC: Tell us about who you are. [3]
Tell us about who you are. How would your family, friends, and/or members of your community describe you? If possible, please include something about yourself that you are most proud of and why. (maximum 1500 characters)
Growing up my family and friends have often described me as someone who is very open-minded and empathic, which also makes me a good communicator because of my ability to effectively put myself in others' perspectives. One thing that my family often picks up is my persistence and patience, particularly when communicating with others and especially children. My mother has mentioned my ability to approach situations in a broader viewpoints and to adjust my tone to better cater to different needs. One of my friends, have always had difficulty with social anxiety and she has thanked me for my perseverance in helping her build up the courage whilst also respecting her boundaries so she can be more confident in open settings whilst interacting with strangers. By encouraging her from time to time, helping her find comfort in unfamiliarity, I do believe she has improved a lot! My peers have also highlighted my ability to create safe spaces for others whether they are formal conversations or about personal topics by incorporating my listening and communication skills, considering me as a trusted friend. In addition, teachers and classmates also describe me as someone with good leadership skills when it comes to group work or projects because of my inclusive approaches to teamwork. My teachers often highlight my advances to ensure all group members are involved and cooperative and also have a voice that is heard without feeling left out, demonstrating my strong collaboration and amiability.
