Writing Feedback / Some people believe that if police force carries guns, this encourages higher level of violence [2]
Whether violence is a controversial topic in modern society. It is thought that if guns are carried by police, the level of violence will rise. Personally, while understanding the valid reasons behind this sentiment, I would contend that carrying guns may not particularly raise the level of violence.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that police force carrying guns can accidentally cause violence. The first clear reason is that it can create fear among residents. If ordinary citizens see the police with firearms, they may feel unsafe, nervous and start avoiding working or facing the police officers. This further would lead to the erosion of trust in the police force. In addition, more dangerous conflicts may occur. If police have guns, criminals may also carry guns, making violence worse. So, the loss of confidence in the police as well as arms race may encourage a higher level of violence in society.
Nevertheless, I believe that a higher level of violence may not necessarily occur when the police are armed. The main reason is that carrying guns can help officers protect themselves and citizens in dangerous situations. For example, during armed criminal attacks, weapons give the police the ability to respond quickly and save lives. Moreover, guns can act as a strong deterrent to criminals. When the police officers equip firearms, criminals may think twice before committing serious crimes because they know the risks are higher.
In conclusion, although the presence of guns among police forces may cause fear and some negative feelings, I still believe that it does not automatically increase violence. With proper training and strict control over the use of firearms, police can maintain public safety and prevent crimes effectively.
