The line chart illustrates the changing rates of three different areas of crime in Newport city centre between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, the number of incidents that took place in burglary witnessed a significant drop throughout the given period, while car theft and robbery remained stable.
Regarding the decreasing category, burglary was the most alarming problem at the beginning at around 3400 incidents. After a peak of 3600 by 2004, it underwent a reversed pattern, hitting the lowest at roughly 1100 in 2008, and came in second place (approximately 1400) at the end.
Concerning the remaining, the number of incidents that took place in car theft started at around 2800 - roughly 600 incidents less than that of burglary. Subsequently, the figure for car theft decreased remarkably to over 2000, prior to a recovery of approximately 2600 incidents in 2012, overtaking burglary category to become the most concerning social issue. Finally, over 600 was the number of robbery incidents in the first examined year, which lagged behind. Over the following 9 years, this figure fluctuated around 600 incidents, then ended at the initial number, remaining the lowest throughout the given period.
