Essays / The positive effects of child-parent communication [2]
Childhood is one of the most important periods to a child. It is the time that their brain is
developing and strengthening many different skills. For example, problem-solving skills are one
example in this situation. Through solving the problem, they can gain more knowledge and think
more logically. This skill also helps people to strengthen their ability of thinking more abstractly.
However, childhood is the time that is mostly affected by their parents. Before going to school,
they learn the basic attitude or skills from their parents. For example, parents taught them how to
wash their hands or how to use the tools to eat foods. They also taught the objects or words if a
child was curious about it. So that child learned from their parents and also learned how to
communicate from their parents. Today I am going to research how the quality of parent-child
communication relates to the development of social skills in preschool-aged children. After the
research, I found out that high quality parent-child communication had a significant effect on the
children's academic performance.
According to the National Library of Medicine which is one of the websites that
researched about the relation between the child-parent communication, they found out that high
"quality parent-child communication had a significantly positive effect on children's academic
performance. This effect can be mediated by the children's self-concept (Zhang)."
In this study, researchers used observational methods and surveys to collect and gather
the data on both parent-child communication. To find out the relationship between parent-child
communication and children's social skills, and a correlational research design will be also
employed. The participants will be preschool children who are between the age between 3 to 5
and their parents or guardians. The methods for this research is that researchers will find
parent-child dyads during a structured play secession in a controlled environment. They will use
an observational checklist that rates the communication based on 3 dimensions. The first is
responsiveness which refers to how often the parent reacts to the child's verbal or nonverbal
communication. The second is the empathy which is the parent's ability to express the
understanding of the child's feelings. The last is clarity which is how clear the parent's
communication is during interactions. Each of the sections will be scored in the scale 1 to 10
which 10 will be the highest score that indicates the more positive communication behaviors.
After the research I got the result which was influenced by the child-parent
communication. They got a positive correlation between parent-child communication and social
skills. It is anticipated that higher quality parent-child communication such as empathetic and
clear interaction will help to strengthen the social skills in children. For example, children whose
parents are more developed have better conflict resolution skills, while those parents who show
more empathy can display heightened empathy toward peers. So those findings can contribute to
our understanding of early child development by emphasizing the importance of high-quality
communication between their parents and children. Also, this correlation supports that
interventions aimed at improving practices of parenting to foster better social skills in young
children.
In conclusion, the high quality of parent-child communication influenced positively to
their child who is a preschooler which helps to develop social interactions. They got the positive
correlation based on the data that was collected by surveys. And this research improved that to
uncover how early parent-child communication impacts preschoolers' social development. And it
provides valuable insights into the role of early family dynamics in shaping children's ability to
pass through their social environments. Through careful design and communication, the study
seeks to represent a meaningful contribution to developmental psychology and inform
interventions. And it helps to promote the growth of healthy social-emotionality in children as
well.
