Hi, I am applying for a Master in Communication Science , and I would love your honest feedback for this motivation letter!
Dear Admission Committee,
My name is X, and I am writing this letter to express my sincere interest in the Master's Program in Communication Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) for the September 2025 intake. I am currently a senior majoring in Media and Entertainment at X University in X.
In the future, I aspire to become a communication strategist working in creative advertising and cultural media. My long-term goal is to develop research-based communication methods that bridge cultural gaps between Asian and Western audiences, whether through film promotion or product marketing. In addition, I want to be a part of projects that showcase diverse stories through digital platforms to shape inclusive, ethically grounded narratives. My passion to pursue this field comes from both my personal experience and my academic exposure. Growing up learning English through online videos, watching K-pop, and later traveling to the United States and living in Korea, I became increasingly fascinated by how communication and media can shape global perspectives and active cultural exchange. These experiences taught me that media is more than entertainment; it is a powerful tool that connects society, influences behaviors, and creates identities. Additionally, my undergraduate studies have deepened this realization. The program showed me how media resonates with different groups and how positioning a message can affect specific audiences. Applying these theories in my projects made me realize that I want to contribute to the world of media that meaningfully influences audience behavior and understanding both professionally and academically.
As my undergraduate program is wrapping up, I realized that advancing towards my career goal requires further rigorous training in research, creativity, and strategic thinking. At the same time, I want to have a chance to develop a competency in one unique field that supports my future ambitions. Therefore, after substantial research, I am convinced that pursuing a Master's in Communication Science with a specialization in Marketing and Corporate Communication at VU Amsterdam is a necessary next step for me.
Firstly, I am interested in the specialization's curriculum for its unique integration of theoretical frameworks with practical media applications that align with my career goals. To be specific, I am particularly drawn to the track's core courses, such as "Marketing Communication and the Consumer" and "Public Relations," which align closely with my academic interests and will strengthen my ability to execute strategic communication and brand management. Simultaneously, I am especially motivated by the opportunity to work with actual clients as their practical feedback is essential for developing industry-ready skills. I am also excited by the selection of electives, particularly the course "Storytelling: The Persuasive Power of Narratives." This course will expand my knowledge of narrative persuasion and build on my background in creative media production. In addition, although I have produced multiple research proposals, my Bachelor's program does not include an independent thesis. Therefore, the chance to undertake a master's thesis with department supervision aligns perfectly with my desire to conduct original research. My current research interest focuses on new media, particularly short-form media, to understand their influence on audience behavior and branding strategies. I aim to develop this topic into well-grounded research through the guidance of the department that would contribute insights into driving positive change through communication. Most importantly, having previously studied major courses at VU Amsterdam as an exchange student, I already know that your open, multicultural academic environment is the place where I can flourish both academically and personally. The courses I took also broadened my understanding of marketing, media psychology, and persuasive communication, strengthening my desire to return. I am confident that this program can equip me with the academic and creative foundation for a meaningful career in this field.
Academically, I have built a strong theoretical background for postgraduate study. Currently, I hold a X GPA, and I am on track to graduate with a Magna Cum Laude distinction. I have obtained high scores on core modules of my program, such as "Critical Thinking for Social Inquiry," "Introduction to Communication," and "Digital Media Psychology," which strengthened my understanding of different media theories, research design, and statistics approaches. I then applied this knowledge through research proposals that tackle different aspects of media and audience effects. For example, in the course "Media, Human & Society," I made a proposal centered on whether short-form media amplifies anchoring bias more for younger users than older ones. I am eager to apply all of this knowledge to my own thesis. In addition, I also gained practical experience in video production. Through classes such as "Introduction to Video Production," "Film Editing," and "Non-fiction Film Making," I learned to translate my cultural insights into compelling visual content through application projects. In addition, I studied two courses relating to storytelling: "Media Storytelling" and "The Art of Storytelling," further strengthening my narrative skills, which will support my engagement with your storytelling elective. Additionally, I also enrolled in two advertising courses: "Advertising Copywriting & Strategic Writing," which provided me with the strategies for creating a message and production, while the course "Planning and Producing PSA" introduced me to how to plan and produce different types of PSAs. Therefore, I believe my proficiency in advertising will enable me to thrive in discussions in the track's main core courses with enough sensitivity and in an ethical manner.
I also look forward to contributing to the cohort with my linguistics abilities and international background. Having lived in many different countries and speaking Vietnamese, English, and Korean, I can enrich class discussions and collaborative projects by offering diverse cultural insights and multicultural sensitivity.
Thank you so much for considering my application. I am greatly looking forward to continuing my academic journey at VU Amsterdam, where I aim to integrate theoretical knowledge, research skills, and creative practice as I work toward my professional goals in global media and communication.
Sincerely,
X
