Undergraduate / UC Prompt #1 - How We Reason [3]

It was fall 2005, not long after I moved to U.S. On a stormy, rainy day, I had just gotten out of school and was walking home when I suddenly saw that there was a car driving into a slough, passing right next to me at a very high speed. Realizing it was all rain and dirt, and could not avoid it; I tried my best to stay away from the curb and prayed that the driver would slow down. Right when I was praying, the driver stepped on the gas pedal, passed me in a greater speed. The driver did not even have intention of slowing down or stopping. I was upset and start to wonder why the driver did not slow down while he was passing pedestrian or why he was even speeding up and does not have any sign of stopping to see if the pedestrian were fine. This brought up my interest on how human reason and decide as they are being called Philosophy.

One of the great experiences is my internship as a teaching assistant in middle school. Once a teacher was absent due to his illness, so the Dean's office was trying to find a substitute teacher. I was working with two other substitutes that day, and it was interesting to observe the responds of both of them when they were called. The class they were asked to teach was full of notorious trouble students, so one of the substitute was very upset and was trying everything he could to avoid this class, the other substitute was different, he wanted to do this and take the challenge even though he might had a hard time. This really intrigued me that the two of them, which both have same great ability, took very different approaches to the same situation.

My other personal experience has further emphasized my interest in studying human’s reasoning and thinking process. Volunteering at a Public library’s children section in South Pasadena, allowed me to observe children and take notice that each student responds differently when instructed by the librarian. Some students happily followed the routine; however others hesitated or tried their own way to finish the task. Often times, students would seek attention by not following the direction and complete the work through some special ways.

Finding out how and why people make different kinds of decision and act the way they do is like solving a riddle. From learning and observing people in how they react to a circumstance fascinates me. Often times, I used my imagination to simulate how others feel under certain situations and why they reason to act in that specific manner. I am truly energetic about my interest in philosophy and plan to pursue them seriously in higher education.
