Undergraduate / Syracuse questions "influence, work experience, real world experiences" [3]

Question 1: Who or what influenced you to apply to Syracuse University?
The idea of applying to Syracuse was first brought up to me by my parents. We had started to look at colleges based on many factors such as the number of students, the location, and the prestige of the school. I am mainly interested in schools on the east side of the country that have about 8,000-15,000 students, and Syracuse fits right in the middle of those criteria. I was also turned on to the school because I am a fan of their lacrosse team. I am a lacrosse player for my high school and am always cheering for the Syracuse lacrosse team.

Question 2) If you have had paid work experience, what skills and/or knowledge did you gain?
I have been employed at Heinen's Fine Foods, a local grocery store, since June of 2008. I mainly work in the front end of the store as a bagger and cashier, but I also help out in the grocery department with things such as stocking shelves and keeping the back stock room in order. I think the greatest skill I have learned from this job has been how to interact with people in a work environment, which in turn has helped my social skills outside of the workplace as well. I also feel that I have gained the knowledge of what it is like to hold a job and go to school at the same time. Many kids in college have some sort of job, and I think that the work experience I am receiving now has helped me manage my time now, and will certainly help me manage my time better when I reach college.

Question 3) Our mission of Scholarship in Action extends beyond the classroom to include engagement opportunities with our campus community, the Cityof Syracuse, and locations across the globe. Based on your academic interests, tell us what real world experiences you might pursue during youreducation at Syracuse University as part of this mission.

Something that I would love to do at some point during my college career is do extensive volunteer work in the medical field. I have volunteered in a hospital before and have even watched surgery first hand, and I found all of it to be very fascinating. Not only would I love to do some sort of work in a hospital again, but I would also like to go to a deprived area of the world and help out people, especially children, with their health needs. Whether it's actual sickness they have or if it is something such as hunger or thirst, I would love to go and help these people take care of basic human needs that many of us take for granted. I think it would be a very rewarding experience and one that I could reflect on as to why I truly want to go into the medical field.
