Scholarship / Working with an autistic preschool boy, is it an OK subject to write about? [3]
I have to write an essay for a competitive college scholarship event. The essay topic is as follows:
"Select a recent leadership experience form which you have learned something important. Briefly describe the experience and explain the lesson you learned and ways in which this lesson will influence your approach to leadership in the future."
I plan to write about the opportunity I had to work with an autistic preschool boy last year. My high school runs a laboratory preschool, and when this child registered, the odds were against him - the principal of the high school did not want to allow him to enter the preschool because he would "endanger other students." I fought aside his family to allow the boy in. I explained that I would be completely responsible, caring, and patient when working with him as his "big buddy." I ensured everyone that the preschool environment would be completely safe, and that if I felt it was becoming unsafe, I would take action to resolve the issues. The boy was allowed into preschool, and the year was more than successful. This event lead me to my passion: teaching autistic children, my future career path.
So, does this seem ok to write about? I was a bit concerned it wasn't exactly the right "leadership" role, but I think I'll be able to follow the topic with my story. Thanks!
