Poetry / Mirroring poetry [3]

The assignment that I had to complete was to choose a handful of poems to mirror. I chose three that I liked and attempted to "mirror" the style and mood/tone of the poems.

There are four sets of two poems; the first one being the poem by an author, and the second one by me.

I need help matching and mirroring my poems after the first poems, suggestions please!

I Am He that Aches with Love

I am he that

Aches with amourous love;

Does the earth gravitate?

Does not all,

Matter,

Aching,

Attract matter?
So the body

Of me to all

I meet or know.

-Walt Whitman

I Wonder

There are things out there

That make me

Ponder,

Inquire,

To question,

To wonder.

So exquisite are the things of

The world.
There are those who

Seek

Those who

Listen

Those who study.

But I am not one of those

That is why

I wonder.

Swahili Love Song

If only

The heart had a lid

I would have opened it

And shown you my grief,

And you would have known

If I am

The one for you

-Anonymous

Forbidden

If only

There was a way

For my mouth to speak,

I would have revealed

My adoration

And you would have seen

That she is

Not the one for you.

Bees

Every bee

That

Ever was

Was

Partly

Sting

And partly

...buzz.

-Jack Prelutzky

Felines

All the cats

That

Ever lived,

Were

Partly

Hiss

And partly

...purr.

The Mindful Scholar

Hour after hour.

Tome after tome.

It is despised now though proven

Advantageous when time come.

Despised yet inclined to

The dues of hardship be paid.

And now receives

The passing grade.

The Pianist

Note after note.

Key after key.

Practice makes perfect

That, I have heard.

When the recital approaches,

The fingers will fly,

And melodies sound.

Without a mistake,

The last chord rings.

Out in the crowd,

The audience applauds.

Essays / An argumentative essay about women and men in the society [4]

An argumentative essay, hmmm...it depends if you want it to be a positive or negative paper. And also who's perspective you are coming from. I'm guessing that you are on the women's side.

You could talk about:
-some of the inequalities between men and women
-how some women are treated by men
-how it is usually men who are privileged with leadership rather than women

etc.

Hope I helped, good luck with your paper!

Essays / Beauty craze in the Western States [3]

I would have to agree on the ridiculousness of this obsession. I am a girl myself, and sometimes I feel the obligation to look/dress a certain way. It's hard to know that people all around expect something of you.

I would suggest (if it is allowed, of course) that you interview a couple girls or women and ask them questions about this topic. It's good to get a wide range of ideas and see how they are affected by the media from [our] point of view.

I'm not quite sure where you would find this subject in books, although there probably are some out there. If anything, magazines definitely have a lot to say about what women should look like. You could include some of that in your essay as well.

Hopefully I helped out a little, good luck with your paper!

Book Reports / Mercutio as a foil to Romeo [5]

My teacher gave my paper back, graded, with some of the same comments. She also said that I didn't prove how Mercutio was the character with common sense. I can't quite find the right words to revise it.

Book Reports / Mercutio as a foil to Romeo [5]

Discuss how Shakespeare uses Mercutio as a foil to Romeo. Compare each character; why is this contrast important??

"Romeo and Juliet" is a play written by William Shakespeare about love, friendship, and tragedy. The story is set in Verona, Italy where two people fall in love. However, the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet, are from families who despise each other. Romeo is dead-set on marrying Juliet, to the point where he'd do anything for her. This becomes a dangerous factor because he is also extremely impatient. Romeo's friend, Mercutio, has more of a level head which amplifies Romeo's flaws. Mercutio's realistic mindset highlights Romeo's dreamy, romantic thinking. Mercutio's common sense magnifies Romeo's impatience that ends up killing him in the end. The comparison of the two characters brings out the imperfections of our tragic hero, Romeo.

Shakespeare uses Mercutio as a foil to Romeo. They are alike in many ways in the way that they talk and their conclusions. Their characters are lively and excessively dramatic in the way that they speak and act. Romeo and Mercutio also meet the same end, both because of Romeo. They also have numerous differences that show their behavioral and personality distinction. Mercutio has a way of thinking that is partially negative but more rational than Romeo's impatient, love-seeking mind. The comparison shows common sense [Mercutio] as opposed to impatient and impractical [Romeo]. They are similar and different at the same time but it helps us better understand Romeo as a character when we see him compared to Mercutio.

Despite their differences, the fates of these two friends are similarly disastrous. Both of their lives were wasted as a consequence of Romeo's impatience. As he was dying, Mercutio spoke out in anger towards Romeo,

"Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm." (P. 124)
Romeo's impatience also provoked himself to commit suicide because he could not wait for Juliet. If he'd only waited a few moments, they would have been reunited;

"Here's to my love! [Drinks.] O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die. [Dies.]" (p. 228)
Although Mercutio's unfortunate death was primarily Romeo's fault, he partially brought it on himself by teasing Tybalt and egging him on with his attitude. An easier solution might've been to drop his sword and walk away, and then, maybe the upcoming chaos could've been avoided. Though these two individuals are quite different, they came to the same conclusion; death.

Being able to distinguish the contrasts between Mercutio and Romeo, it helps us to better comprehend Romeo's character. His flaws become highlighted and aid us in seeing where he goes wrong in the things he does. Shakespeare writes Mercutio as the one who has common sense and a level head to show what Romeo is missing as a hero. Mercutio's character has a better sense of reality, whereas Romeo ignores the negatives and charges head-on into chaos with the Capulets. He has to be constantly reminded by Benvolio, Mercutio and the Friar about his choices, making him look naïve and senseless. Mercutio's character is decisive and focuses on the realistic side of life. Romeo on the other hand is a dreamer, addicted to love. He stumbles around, fickle, looking everywhere for affection.

Mercutio's role reminds us how friends can bring out the best and the worst in you. They can change you for the better or for the worst. It may seem like Mercutio is only a minor character, but he is the one who defines Romeo as a tragic hero. The diversity between Mercutio and Romeo emphasizes Romeo's defects of impatience and dreamer mentality that result in grief and suicide.
