Undergraduate / I observed an ESL class, and wrote down a journal about that. [3]

Question # 1
How many activities take place during the class?
Two days ago, I observed once again the Communication Skills class of Mr. Karl at Interlink language center. This time I focused on the activities that were done during the class and the participation of the students. Basically, there were two major activities. First one was the listening activity; the teacher read a passage and asked his students to take notes and to concentrate as much as they could. After the teacher finished reading, he asked them comprehended questions and they had to get the answers from their own notes. I noticed that not all of the students could catch the details that Mr. Karl read already. He solved the situation with a quick and perfect idea which is asking them to get into groups and exchange their notes with each other. In this way they can collect their separate information and answer their teacher's questions. You can notice that the teacher jump from one activity to another smoothly. Most of the students paid very much attention to what did their teacher say, and did their best to share with each other the discussion throughout the class. I noticed that they prefer the group working activity, so they can speak and discuss their opinions; In this way they could be more confident to say them aloud.

Question # 2
Where does the teacher stand while giving directions and while students are working?
Mr. Karl was standing in front of the class while he gave his directions. However he was moving around while the students were working. Some students needed him maybe to clarify some points or give some examples, so he was walking around to help them with that. Also, he was using his computer to search for some information which would be very helpful to the students. He ended the class by remind the students to bring or email him their assignments in the due day which is Monday, and asked them to search more on the Internet about the topic.
