Graduate / Why Statistics? Admission Essay MA Statistics Program [3]
A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant's interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.
Why Statistics? Jon Kettering's words can explicitly answer that: "I like to think of statistics as the science of learning from data... It presents exciting opportunities for those who work as professional statisticians. Statistics is essential for the proper running of government, central to decision making in industry, and a core component of modern educational curricula at all levels." In my opinion, statistics science, offers me the way to abstract those essentials and rules, from their original complicacy, out of numerous phenomena and data. Enjoying exploration of the data world, I find my heart lies in applied subject through statistics. So I want to become a data analyst that has an unique skill to interpret the real world.
I get special pleasure in extracting information out of raw data. At xxx College, I took courses that help me learn about regression techniques, time series analysis, correlation analysis and multivariate analysis which deal with methods and theories that have direct application to various real-life problems. In addition to these, I had a series of courses in Economics during my undergraduate years that give me great opportunity to analyze different types of data-sets.
I was assigned a research project at an Econometrics class taught by Professor xxx, that to utilize the statistical analysis and tools to prove an economic theory that provided me with a great opportunity to study in detail the possible consequences of multivariate model. My research topic was Multivariate regression on inflation: An analysis of Phillips curve in the United States. To prove the Phillips curve was downward slope, I collected various raw data sets for my model from Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and converted and tested them through Microsoft Excel program Data Analysis tool. I was advised to choose data sets between 1977 to 2008. At first, I tried put two variables in a bivariate regression model, then added few more variables into that model and test them on a multivariate regression model. At the end I present my finding to Professor xxx and my classmates. Throughout the whole experience of extracting and manipulating data, I gained great deal of learning not only economics but more importantly was statistics and started realizing my heart lies on that subject.
I understand that to become a great statistician one must have good quantitative skills. So while I am preparing my application to graduate school for Statistics program, I start learning computer programming language such as C++ and mathematics topics again through MIT Open Courseware and UC Berkeley Webcasts. I am convinced myself that I am well equipped to start my graduate study.
I presently need a serious academic institution to be trained into a full-fledged statistician. The best place, the program I like most, is xxx College. xxx College has a world-class faculty, advanced research facilities and a stimulating academic atmosphere. Especially, many professors in the department pay attention to both theory and practical areas and some professors are doing really attractive researches in some interdisciplinary fields. I am sure I can be best trained in my most interested fields, such as data analysis and econometrics from Professors xxx and xxx.
