Graduate / "to work for the highest international organization" - M.SC ENV POLICY AND REGULATION [3]

Ever since I studied Environmental sciences as one of my subjects while pursuing Bachelor of Engineering course in Biotechnolgy, this subject has deeply intrigued me. The rate at which the environment is deteriorating is alarming. However, equally astounding is the reluctance on the part of the general public to take concrete actions against natural disasters, waiting to happen. What is encouraging in the face of this bleak picture is that a generation of responsible young people, including myself, is making relentless efforts to save the much-abused environment from further deterioration.

Nevertheless, it seems that environmental protection is such an immense task that no matter what efforts we make, they never suffice. We,in India, have a lot to learn from the advanced countries of West,so far as environmental protection is concerened.Through a publication titled "Problems and Prospects of Environmental Policy-Indian Perspective" which referred to the National Environmental Policy,I realized that the existing legal-cum-policy framework in India has proved to be exceedingly inadequate and, in many cases, ineffective.

On the other hand, with the increasing awareness of the importance of environmental protection, environmental control is developing into a new industry with a promising prospect. To pursue a successful personal career in this field has become my aspiration. Under such circumstances,I file this personal statement to your esteemed university with the hope of seeking more advanced training in the field of environmental policy and regulation.Having gone through the course structure,I feel M.Sc in Environmental Policy and Regulation at London School of Economics is a good programme with sharp focus on relevant areas that will help me become a competent professional in the field.

I would like to study the social and economic factors that influence environmental policy formation.Highr the public outcry about an issue, more attention it gets from the policy-makers. For example, pollution at various levels scores far more than the endangered species of flora and fauna. I am particularly interested in the course module: Environmental Regulation: Implementing Policy. I am keen to learn what goes into laying down of environmenta policy, its regulation and governance. It would be interesting and useful to study the influence of various interest groups before the final draft of a serious policy emerges out. What fascinates me most is the interdisciplinary approach of London School of Economics combining social science's strengths with a knowledge of the natural sciences necessary to protect and preserve the environment.

Having worked in the field of sustainable agriculture as the Project Conevener in Delhi for Indian Social Action Forum(INSAF) with eminent social activists and agriculural scientists in India viz, Dr.Vandana Shiva,Ms Kavitha Kuruganthi,Dr.G.V Ramanjaneyulu and Dr.Devinder Sharma, I realized the importance of "The earth does not belong to the human beings but the human beings belong to the earth."I also convened an independent youth group called "Youth for Safe Food" which works on food security issues and makes an effort to reach out to the youth of the country as well as the urban consumers. Our most recent achievement is the launch of a consumer awareness campain called "I am no Lab Rat"in association with Association for India's Development(AID),and getting an indefinite moratorium on India's first genetically modified food crop,Bt Brinjal.I have also,as a part of my work, attended several national level fora, like consultations regarding National Seeds Bill and National Food Security Bill.Furthermore, this exposure, gave me an insight into the intricacies of policy making aspects in a democratic setup like ours.I organized various workshops titled "Revisiting Food Security" and "Green Revolution in Eastern India" and have tried to get the economists, agricultural scientists, social activists and the youth on one platform. To increase my knowledge on natural farming or ecological farming,I volunteered with an organic farm called Van Vadi in Maharashtra under the guidance of Sh Bharat Mansata who is a much acclaimed author of various books on the subject. The most recent one being "The Vision of Natural Farming".It was a wonderful opportunity to gather farming experience at grass-root level. It stimulated thinking and gave fresh ideas to a 23 year old student like me.

Having worked in the development sector for an year,I feel greatly inclined to pursue an appropriate post graduate course. My aim is to widen the horizon of my thinking and to get advanced training and work experience at international level.I believe that LSE is the paragon which will help me achieve my goals. I am particularly attracted to the opportunity of undertaking a research project in collaboration with companies and organizations from a wide range of sectors that is available at LSE. I believe that taking advantage of the strong industrial connections would also help the planning of my future career. Furthermore, the diversity of people available at LSE will provide me with platform to interact with specialists from different backgrounds and would enable further understanding of issues related to sustainable development in the third-world countries.

I always believe that those of us who are privileged, with respect to both talents and abilities, are obliged to contribute on a larger scale.I come from a unique cultural background which has contributions from respect for all religions, ancient civilization, quick march to modernity an a fast growing economy.I am sure, my Indian way of life and practices will infuse a sense of warmth, understanding and tolerance in the fellow students. As I successfully complete my postgraduate course, I hope to work for the highest international organization which is involved in the field of implementing global environmental policy and its regulation.I assure you that if provided the opportunity, I will prove myself a capable and dedicated individual. I should be chosen among the other candidates because of my own international cultural background and my ambition to attend a university with a strong international focus and consolidated commitment toward excellence such as LSE.I do realize this would be a new chance to commensurate me with a new world in a way that could help me shape and fortify my own personality.
