Letters / Cover letter for a young graduate trainee placement [2]

Hey!

I actually discovered this site by mere chance but I'm really glad I did since I need help with my cover letter for a trainee application I'm soon about to send. I'm hoping you can provide me with some valuable comments and criticism of what I've written so far. English is not my native language so any help will be greatly appreciated :)

I have the pleasure to write this letter to express my intent to join the Young Graduate Trainees at the XX Space Agency in the field of aerothermodynamics and propulsion analysis. I'm currently in my last year of the MSc programme in Space engineering at XX University of Technology with the intention of graduating in May/June next year. Although my undergraduate studies were dedicated towards pursuing a career in the space industry, my interest has shifted to the field of aerospace engineering - with a special interest in fluid mechanics and numerical analysis - during my graduate studies. In the autumn of 2008 I had my first course in computational fluid dynamics and soon came to realise that I had found my calling. Since then I have strived to broaden my knowledge in the field by taking as many related courses at the university as possible. My passion lies with CFD, related to the vehicle industry and I hope to be working with for a very long time.

This spring I participated in a 6-month project in applied mechanics where we, using CFD, aimed to visualise and confirm the vortex formation on the upper side of maple seeds as they descend through the air and if this could account for the high lift attained by the seeds. This had previously only been visualised in experiments with the use of DPIV measurements. This project was well received by our supervisors, Prof. XX XX and YY YY (Division of Fluid Mechanics, XX University of Technology) and granted that the latter of them finish it in time before retiring, will be part of a publication coming out next year. This project greatly helped me develop my problem solving skills and gain more knowledge in numerical analysis with commercial software such as Ansys CFX and ICEM. Working with other people towards a common goal is something I enjoyed a lot and believe is a great advantage in many cases and I've discovered that I'm at my best in a team based environment.

During my last semester I've had the opportunity to participate in additional relevant courses outside my curriculum, e.g. a course in heat and mass transfer where I've learned a great deal about external and internal flows under the direction of Lecturer XX XX (Division of Energy Engineering, YY University of Technology). I have also had the opportunity to participate in a doctoral course in Quality & Trust in industrial CFD where I at the moment get to study best practice guidelines from ERCOFTAC in single and multiphase flows and how to perform reliable CFD simulations. I believe that this knowledge together with learning error estimation and quantification of uncertainty will be a great asset in the young graduate programme as well as during my master thesis.

Having studied in a multinational environment at the university I believe has improved my communication skills in English significantly and since XX is a place of large national diversity I think this will facilitate me working at XX perfectly. I also think that having spent a semester at the Department of Space Science in YY in 2009, with courses in space environment interaction and spaceflight dynamics coupled with my acquired knowledge in fluid-/thermodynamics and CFD has provided me a good solid base in the area. A base I consider to be well suited for the position of trainee in aerothermodynamics and propulsion analysis.

I hope that by this letter I have increased your interest in me and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kind Regards
Andreas
