Undergraduate / 'the Megabloks' - UC PROMPT 1 Major: Mechanical Engineering [2]

Describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school - and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

MegaBloks, my younger sister, and computer-aided design. These three have assembled the person I am today. Looking back, I wish that I had more time to connect with my parents. My mother would either be cooking dinner or washing the dishes, while my father would always come home late from work and continue conference calls after dinner. At a young age, I did not spend much time with my family. Instead, I was given MegaBloks and Legos to play with. Because I had always finished my homework early, I had time to play with my blocks. Every night I would create a robot. The robots I made never looked the same, yet I always used the same parts. The only toys I was allowed to play with soon became the only toys I would play with.

As I got older, the Megabloks turned into model kits. I would assemble robots, ships that turned into robots, or even robot cars, but the downside to my fondness of this activity is that once I bought the kit, I would build it right away, granting all the fun to myself instantaneously. My love for building models only intensified when my younger sister was born. Because she was still so young, I would make small figurines for her to play with. Seeing her clap and smile made me feel older - I knew my parents would still have a lot of work, so I would try to minimize their workload by taking care of my sister. My father saw that I had an interest in creating and sharing projects, so he showed me some of his engineering programs.

Whilst in high school, when my homework and household chores were completed, I would make sketches on my computer. With computer-aided designing, making models seemed so simple; I had the ability to create whatever I wanted, however I wanted. My interests still lied in making robots. On Saturday mornings, while my sister watched cartoons, I would make breakfast for the family. Occasionally, she would come up to me and tell me that some of the replicas in my room were on the television. Over time, her small comments fueled me to draw my own robot pieces. I dug up my earlier models for inspiration and even made a few successful sketches. My curiosity in designing could not be quenched so easily; I had to see what others were doing. As I flipped through my issue of Servo Magazine, I sensed that my sketches are merely amateur. With proper tutelage, I know that I will someday be able to create my own robot.

Although my fascination with robots began with busy parents and Lego pieces, it resulted in taking care of my sister, designing my own robots, and desiring a career in which I will be exuberant and capable in. Whenever I have the opportunity, I still show my parents my work; in the end, I want them to know that they raised a child with a future.

I know that my essay is not very well written and can be improved a lot, so help would be very much appreciated! I am trying to show that I am very interested in the subject, yet still a human! Does my essay tell you the type of person that I am? Thanks for all your help!
