"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." This
quote from George Orwell's revealing novel Animal Farm represents the hypocrisy
that homosexuals are faced with constantly. While our country has become more
tolerant of homosexuality, there is still much to be done before we can
accurately state that all men are created equal. Every day, men and women are
denied simple rights, such as marriage, because of their sexual orientation.
Being a gay high school student, I do not want to become an adult in a society
where intolerance is honored. Currently, same-sex marriage is recognized in six
states, plus the District of Columbia. This troubling statistic does not
coincide with the beliefs that this country was brought upon.
The customary opposition to gay marriage is that it is immoral and violates the
sacred institution of marriage. To avoid our country from becoming a theocracy,
our Founding Fathers established a government that separated the church from
state. Therefore, the Bible has absolutely no standing in American law. If ones
opposition to gay marriage is based on religious arguments, said opposition can
easily be discredited.
Being a gay student in high school, it irritates me whenever I hear that gays
shouldn't marry because they are unfit parents. In our society, child molesters
and convicted felons are allowed to marry and procreate, without a modicum of
criticism. If children are truly the main concern here, then the individuals
stated earlier shouldn't be allowed to marry and reproduce. There have also
been a plethora of scientific studies stating that children raised in
households with gay and lesbian parents are just as loved as children with
heterosexual parents. What makes the difference between heterosexual parents
and homosexual parents is not the gender of the parents, but the love they
supply to their children.
Another popular argument against gay marriage is that it will promote
homosexuality in public schools. This absurd theory has not occurred in any
significant way, so this argument has no cogent basis. Tolerance of homosexuals
is being condoned in public schools, not promotion. The absence of tolerance is
narrow-mindedness, and if tolerance is not present in public schools, prejudice
is recognized.
To deny people the simple right to wed is downright deplorable. The arguments
to the contrary are completely fallacious. The proponents for banning gay
marriage are camouflaging their true views of homosexuality by using the
hackneyed excuses identified earlier in the essay. The authentic viewpoints,
which are the antithesis of equality, have developed through ignorant hatred.
The deleterious effects of making callowness the norm truly show how far our
nation must go to truly acquire freedom.
