Graduate / The practical aspects of the curriculum - SOP [5]

Hello All,

I need suggestions regarding my SOP for graduation in Mechanical Engineering

Since childhood I had been curios about things around me. Being the youngest in my family, I looked upon my two siblings to share their experiences. Being engineers in reputed firms like IBM, they both catapulted my zeal to discover

I had always desired to be a part of renowned Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and IIT-JEE where best minds of India study Technology and Research after competing at one of the world's toughest entrance exam. I was proud to be amongst top 1% with an all India rank of 2670. IIT-JEE success paved the way for my formal technical education by providing me the opportunity to join the prestigious Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University. The choice of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BHU was inevitable due to its global recognition and the highly renowned faculty and alumni association

Right from the inception, I had a predilection for the practical aspects of the curriculum. I thoroughly enjoyed studying fluid dynamics and Turbo-machines. I undertook practical training in two very different organizations so as to better explore different work environments, understand my own strengths and decide which career path I would embark upon. My first training stint at Diesel Locomotive works (India), gave me an insight into the manufacturing and assembling of heavy Diesel Engines. Later, at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, a fortune 500 company, I was involved in Gas Turbines and Power plant troubleshooting. Although I had received positive feedbacks and compliments from my mentors at both organizations, I found myself more inclined towards Turbo-machines. At IOCL, I was assigned a project to rectify a malfunctioning Steam jet ejector wherein I used my software skills and simulation knowledge to reach to a theoretical but precise inlet steam flow and quality of steam to inlet nozzle in order to maintain required vacuum. I also studied the flow of steam in convergent-divergent inlet nozzle to determine various losses resulting in inefficiency of jet ejector.

These stints motivated me to approach Dr. A.P Harsha, (Professor, Mechanical Department) who taught me Control system. As part of a project under his guidance, I studied the characteristic curves of Centrifugal compressor using flow simulation techniques and subsequently designed a Control System for Surge control of single stage Centrifugal Compressor. I thoroughly enjoyed working under him, learning control aspects, and computational fluid dynamics of Turbo-machines.Through this project I was able to garner a basic understanding about electronics control systems and most importantly, Computational fluid dynamics

Owing to my interest in Turbo-machines, I joined GAIL (India) Ltd as Senior Engineer in Mechanical maintenance Division of Gas processing unit after graduation. Two years of industrial experience at India's largest Gas Transmission & processing company has given me an insight into the practical aspects of Turbo machines as a whole. I have been fortunate to play a vital role in the major overhauling of Gas Turbines and Centrifugal compressors. This involvement fostered my interest in the design aspects of Turbo-machines and their control mechanism.

I am aware of the complexities involved in future growth of Turbo-machines like developing high temperature sustaining material, minimizing frontal area for aircraft propulsion and developing cooling methods for Turbine blades which present vast area of research in this field. Therefore, I intend to attend a graduate school and by undertaking a program in Turbomachinery Aeromechanical University Training, take the first step in my commitment to tackle these issues. As one of its kind, this course is a perfect match for my passion and competence which has led to my decision to join THRUST program. The mobility option is a unique one as it provides a once in a life time opportunity to be a part of various cultures. I believe that the graduate program in ________________ at ___________________ University best fits my academic and research interests, and offers the most exciting avenues to expand my horizons and develop my skills.

My academic performance, professional experience and research interests underline my credentials for admission and emphasize my potential to add an element of diversity to the program. My objective reasoning skills, ability to grasp concepts easily and communication, presentation and investigative skills will undoubtedly help me tackle the challenges that lie ahead. In addition to contributions towards academia and research, I would be happy to act as a mentor and guide for junior students, participate in intramural sports and play a leadership role in organizing cultural exchanges, community service projects and other student activities. This all round involvement would undoubtedly help me to develop and grow in different areas and simultaneously enhance the sojourn of my fellow students. That, for me, embodies the essence of a _____________ University education.
