Graduate / 'the wonderful world of Electronics & Communications' (MS in Electrical Engineering) [2]

Here it is ::
It was always my dream to become an engineer right from the beginning when I played with remote controlled toy cars. It always fascinated me how a machine can do work without human touch. Being from a small town, I always knew the importance of technology. I have seen the lives of people changing with the use of technology. I remember people using television to give education to farmers. Further experience during my ECE curriculum strengthened my belief and conviction that this unique field of engineering that revolutionized the late 20th century holds even greater promise to better human condition on this planet. I am excited to further hone my skills and broaden my exposure by pursuing graduate studies in USA, a nation that has been at the forefront of this revolution.

In India, we are currently witnessing a rapid growth in this field. Although research in this area is not comparable to that in developed nations, the design, engineering and fabrication industries are growing rapidly. Various US based companies have set up their offices in India and launched several initiatives for promotion of the ECE industry in India. India is also home to one of the largest cellular phone markets in the world and as a late adaptor it is in a unique position to leapfrog several developmental stages to better the lives of its vast populace.

I have always been a bright student and my inclination towards Mathematics and Physics made it apparent that I was to be an engineer. I have been a consistent top academic performer throughout all stages of schooling and had graduated high school with 2nd rank(Science subjects) in my state. During my undergraduate studies I have found ECE to be highly challenging and rewarding. My interest in electronics was triggered by a course in the fundamentals of semiconductor devices and communication techniques at high school. Of all the subjects that I learned Digital System design and Digital Signal Processing are the subjects that I found most interesting.

Apart from the stipulated courses, I have undertaken several projects that progressively enhanced my learning of theory and concepts by practical application. During my seventh semester I worked on audio compression techniques. I implemented speech coder like Linear prediction based coder(LPC) and parts of audio codec like the implementation of filter banks Pseudo quadrature matched filter (PQMF) and Wavelet based filter banks and used it in conjunction with Modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) and psychoacoustic model to compress the sound. I actually understood the mathematical techniques used to remove so much redundant information.

In the last semester of my studies I worked with Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) to develop a 'CCD sensor imaging system' that will sense light projected towards the surface of planets to determine the kind of minerals present in the crust of that planet according to their characteristics. It is a sense of pride for me as this project is to be used as a prototype to develop the original one which is to be used in ISRO's second moon mission 'Chandrayan-2'. It also received the award of the top 5 projects of the year at the institute. The project scope has helped me develop an in-depth knowledge of the challenges and issues involved in practical implementation of the theory we study.

During last year while working with Motorola I have been lucky to have come across the latest technologies in work like CDMA and LTE. It really helped me understand how different components in a network work seamlessly with little failures. This exposure in practical corporate environment opened the new dimension of thoughts hence I am in quest of further knowledge in this field.

With a desire to contribute to the growth and advancement of the ECE industry and make a name for myself in this field, I look first to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and expertise. As Abraham Lincoln once said „Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe‟, I too believe the present time is best served by preparing myself for the challenges ahead. A Masters in Electrical Engineering is the next step in this journey. It is my aim to enhance my knowledge, develop key research abilities and contribute to the research being carried out in this field especially in areas like Communications and Signal Processing. To be able to do so at <UNINAME> - the frontrunner in this field - would be an honor for me. I am hard-working and focused on the goals I seek to realize and the learning experience at <UNINAME> will greatly empower me in my professional career and enable me to truly contribute to the wonderful world of Electronics and Communication
