Graduate / 'it will help me adapt to the automobile industry' SOP college application- Cranfield [NEW]

Please include any further information that may be relevant for assessing your suitability on the course, including a brief statement outlining your motivation for pursuing your stated course here at Cranfield, your career aspirations and any plans you may have immediately after completing the course.

AS KIDS

As kids we are attracted to the brightest colors and most interesting things that our eyes set upon. As with many others at that age, automobiles were a huge fascination for me. It was not a thing that passed, the feeling lingered along and after all these years, and after graduating from college it has motivated me to take up a masters in the subject.

My interest towards automobiles led me to take mechanical engineering as my undergraduate course. During the first year of my college, I was introduced to software like AutoCAD and ProE, which opened the doors to design and modeling. CATIA was helpful in increasing my knowledge of finite element analysis. After the first year, I underwent Industrial training at M/s. Ambal Auto, dealers in Maruti Suzuki Ltd. This training brought an insight into the auto industry. Hands-on training was given top priority at the service center, this meaning I had to step in and fix up issues under the mechanic's guidance. This industrial interface has enhanced me to understand the different electronic systems involved in Automobiles, the emission standards, servicing and maintenance of a car.

During college, I was part of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in college. Under the banner of these societies, we organized many seminars and workshops relating to hybrid vehicle technology, advances in automotive technology etc. It also helped me interact with several distinguished personalities and also understand the importance of team work. In the third year of college, a group of us organized an RC car show and workshop at college. It was a first of a kind event in the state.

The final year at my college requires us to do a project as part of the curriculum with one whole semester dedicated to the sole purpose. I and three others were part of this project. It dealt with the development of four wheeler chassis dynamometer test rig where we had to design and build it from scratch. We started this from basic calculations such as the load the rig would need to support to the capacity of the dynamometer required in the setup. Having finished this we obtained proposals from suppliers for the sensors, dynamometer and fabrications of the rig. I and another friend developed the interface program using virtual instrumentation software called LabVIEW; with this we could measure the vehicle speed, temperature, torque etc. Owing to lack of funds, we were not able to build it completely. In spite of it, the project was received with laurels from the faculty and widely appreciated.

I was recruited by Ashok Leyland, a commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, while still in college. They manufacture a wide range of trucks and buses and now have found their foray into the light commercial vehicle segment. It started out as a venture between Ashok motors based in India and British Leyland from the UK .It is currently owned by the Hinduja group.

After an initial training for a period of four months, I work in product development with the suspension team. Initially I handled a project that involved the implementation of an air suspension system on of the buses manufactured by Ashok Leyland. Later I worked on the bogie suspension system for over a year. Currently I work on all truck mechanical suspension projects with the exception of bogie suspension. I recently worked on the new U-truck range launched by the company this year.

Having gained over two years of exposure into the auto industry and with my interest in Automobiles, combined with today's stress on optimizing fuel consumptions, need for alternate fuels, lower emission levels and higher quality parameters makes Automotive Engineering the ideal choice for my graduate program.

After research regarding the course offered by various Universities in England, I was delighted to know that the Masters program in Automotive Engineering at Cranfield is the best. Having looked at the research facilities and course modules that are being offered, I am sure that this definitely is the place where I would like to develop and hone my skills.

"If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write something worth reading or do things worth writing." This quote by Benjamin Franklin is my motto. Armed with Masters in Automotive Engineering from your esteemed Institution, I aspire to create an automobile that would be worth writing about.
