Undergraduate / 'human-focused care'- Cornell College of Human Ecology Essay [2]

Hey everyone,

First off thank you for taking the time to read my essay. I'm just looking for some honest feedback. Thank you!

The prompt is:

"What do you value about the College of Human Ecology perspective and the majors that interest you, as you consider your academic goals and plans for the future?"

All physicians share a commonality; they made an oath. I seek to become one of these physicians and to make that very same oath. While I am not yet ready to make this important vow with my current knowledge, I know that a degree in Human Biology, Health, and Society will bring me closer to that aspiration.

I will learn how to honestly vow to value these components of Weill Cornell Medical College's Hippocratic Oath at the College of Human Ecology:

That I will seek the counsel of others when they are more expert so as to fulfill my obligation to those who are entrusted to my care;

Human Ecology promotes teamwork and collaboration among not only its students but also across all of Cornell's colleges. This interconnected nature of students leads to a menagerie of perspectives on the same issues. I admire that the College of Human Ecology promotes interdisciplinary perspectives on issues related to health. I also believe that health care should not be limited to treating physical ailments, but also the sociological and psychological symptoms. The College of Human Ecology and I share this perspective of promoting the general health of people with an interdisciplinary education. As a physician, I will use my knowledge of social and physical sciences to treat my patients as the multifaceted beings they are.

That I will lead my life and practice my art with integrity and honor, using my power wisely;

I respect the College of Human Ecology for treating biological sciences as an art and not just a theories and specifics. Artists can begin painting and sculpting with ease and start creating their masterpieces. However, I feel scientists are not often given the same luxury with their art form, research. I am eager to explore the ample undergraduate research opportunities the college provides. Cornell would provide the canvas and clay for the scientific artist within me to explore my greatest potential.

That I will be an advocate for patients in need and strive for justice in the care of the sick;

The College of Human Ecology emphasizes the responsibility of health care workers to not only to treat people, but support them in society. I feel an enormous factor in the wellbeing of people is the community they live in. I have volunteered at my local hospital's emergency room for the past year and always look for ways to improve the hospital environment. Whether it be keeping patients company or checking beds regularly for fresh linens. I share the belief with the College of Human Ecology that an environment conducive to health is just as vital as the intricacies of the science behind medicine.

I know that an education from Cornell would prepare me to take this oath and fulfill my desire to provide human-focused care. My oath to the College of Human Ecology is that I will regard human life with the utmost respect while aspiring to achieve my greatest potential.
