The history of human progress shows a distinctive pattern that it has always been personal endeavours which led to the fulfillment of great dreams. No nation or individual has found success just by day-dreaming. It is on the 'shoulders of giants' where man stood to see the horizons of the future. Dreams have concretized in those societies where a strong foundation already existed for the fulfillment of that specific dream. An a posteriori study of societal and scientific history proves this fact.
The emancipation of Afro-American which we see today in United States is a result of the hard work done by the nation in the bygone years. It was through the hardship of the Black American that the United States has achieved the present level of progress. Unfortunately, the Black people were never given equality and liberty as enjoyed by the White race. The Afro-Americans saw a dream to get their self-evident rights of equality amalgamated in the body of Martin Luther King. His fight for equal rights has become a hall-mark for all civil liberty movements around the world. Luther then said, "I've a dream, I've a dream today". His words caused a shrill in the souls of Whites and Blacks alike. The Afro-American used every possible forum so their voice could be heard be the higher echelons of power. It wasn't an empty dream without any sacrifice. Rather, it had a history of blood and revolt behind it. Rose Parker, an Afro-American lady, revolted to the white people demand of sitting at the back of the bus while the whites sit on the front. The acts performed by Rose Parker and millions of other Afro-American yesterday have today concretized in the shape of Barrack Obama.
Similar to the history of United States, we see a similar pattern across the pound. The history of Europe also shows that organization like the European Union finds its reason for existence from the European Coal and Steel Association. It was Jean Monnet who not only saw a dream of uniting Europe but also did work for accomplishing his dream. Monnet deciphered from his study that the reason of war between France and Germany was due to the fight between the coal and steel resources. Monnet, a French politician, decided to find a joined mechanism to look after them. The work he did yesterday has today concretized in the shape of European Union which has twenty seven members. There are no visa requirements between EU states. Europeans have become a single family with a single currency and same goal of strengthening the European continent. Jean Monnet wasn't doing empty talks but rather proved his mechanism to be a working model for European progress.
In contrast, we in South Asian only see dreams of uniting the South Asian block but never did our homework to fulfill our dreams. Nations in this region are involved in arm race and paradoxically also work for peace. Such an attitude is a hurdle for everlasting peace in the region. Like the Europeans we should also dream on solid ground.
The example of Malaysia is also worth mentioning. A country which got independence in 1963 is now one of the finest economies of the region. Malaysia started from a weak economic base but is now a prime location for tourism in Asia. It is through the efforts of Marteer Muhammad, Malaysia has risen to new heights. Muhammad show a dream on making a secular modern state in which religion would be a personal subject while the state would look after the economic and social well being of its citizen. He from the first day worked to fulfill his goal and turned Malaysia into a free market economy. He allowed massive foreign direct investment in the country and today Malaysia is a realization of his dreams.
Singapore like Malaysia is also an example of a hard working nation. Singapore got independence in the 1960s and was an example of a third world country. The Singaporean leader Lee Kaun Yua took the step to change it in a free market economy to reap the benefits of capitalism. Lee's success story is the same as Marteer Muhammad.
Again and again, we see a common pattern in history; it is toil and sweat of a man or nation which has taken it to new height. Day dreaming and waiting for divine help has never reaped any fruit in any part of history. A study of technological development also depicts this nomenclature of progress.
The development of nuclear bomb is a prime example of hard work resulting in achieving dreams. The venture to tame the power of an atom was a very difficult and intellectual project. It was a dream backed by the pioneers of that time. Scientist such as Somerfield, Einstein, Dirac and Feynman worked tremendously hard to bring this dream into realization. These extraordinary scientists dreamt of a world where man would be in control of massive energy. There dream was not just castles built in air, rather it was support by eloquent mathematical theories. During the Manhattan Project, US venture of making a nuclear bomb, scientist had turned the tennis court if the university of California into a science lab. This showed the determination they have put in to achieve their goal.
The invention of plane and car is no different from the history of nuclear bomb. The Wright brothers did hundreds of failed experiments before the eventual final flight of their first plane.
The scientific wonders which we see today around us, such as mobile phones, computers and the light bulb are all output of a tiresome and difficult process of innovation. One man form the history of science is worth mentioning here. This man is Thomas Edison. He once said, "A genius is one percent inspiration while ninety nine percent perspiration". Inspiration does help in broadening our vision but in reality it is the fruit of our hard work which leads us success. Edison is also quoted saying, "If I fail ten thousand times then I've learnt ten thousand ways in which things won't work." Edison's life is the most definite example of these citations. His whole life is a life of hard work and today his invention of the filament lamp diminishes darkness from part of the globe.
This was a historical analysis of work which resulted into dreams coming true. Now we will at modern day examples of people trying to make a different by being an agent of change.
The dream of a democratic Arab world is a dream in which the young Arabs have come out on the streets to become the captain of their destinies. They have given their blood and revolted against the despots of the region. The Arab spring wasn't just a theoretical discussion among intellectuals. It started from Tunisia where a graduate in computer science revolted the reign of Zain-ul-abdin like Rose Parker revolted against the terror of the White race in United States. This graduate tried to do a suicide and the whole nation stood behind him. The flare of dissent against kings not only burned Tunisia, it spread over the North African Arab speaking countries; from Algeria to Egypt and Libya. Then the flame of dissent spread out in the Middle East. The dictators of this part of the world must hearken to their people. The regime of Bahrain and Syria will topple like the regime of Yemen. Daring women like Tawakkul Karman, the 2011 Nobel Laureate for peace, are now the symbols of change for teenagers of the Middle East. The dream of a democratic Middle East has not yet been fulfilled. But it is an undeniable fact that the revolution came into being through the active participation of the commoners. A democratic Middle East would owe to the sacrifice given by this class.
The Chinese people are a living example of fulfilling their dreams through hard work. China is progressing at a rate of 9.0% annually for the last decade. It is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and would surpass Japanese economy this year. China has also become the largest exporter. All this is achieved through the hard work of its people and their leaders. The Communist Party of China took a clear economic policy, built great dams and liberalized economy for the outside world. Chinese's policy combined with the hard work of the Chinese nation will allow China to became the next power of the world.
Inside Pakistan, we see many people who are trying to fulfill dreams through constant input.
For fulfilling the vision of a healthy Pakistan, four people are quite recognizable. Imran Khan with his Shaukat Khanom Memorial Hospital, Engr. Abrar-ul-Haq with his Sahara Trust, Abdul Sattar Edhi with his Edhi ambulance service and Umar Shareef with MAA (mother) hospital. All these four imminent personalities saw a vision of helping the poorest strata of the society. They are doing a commendable job in this field. All of these personalities saw a dream of making future's Pakistan healthier compared to today. To back their dreams they started projects on individual levels which have not turned into symbols of national pride. Although we haven't achieved this goal yet, but a dream of a healthier Pakistan rely on the work today.
In the same way, some groups are also trying to make tomorrow's Pakistan more educated compared to today's. A report on education published by an American association illustrates the deplorable condition of Education in Pakistan. According to the report, around fifty percent of Grade 5 students are not able to read Grade 2 Urdu stories. Similar statistics are for English. To fulfill the dream of an educated Pakistan, a group by the name of 'Teach for Pakistan' has come on the landscape. It is global movement which targets to improve the condition of primary school system. With this goal as its manifesto, 'Think for Pakistan' is doing a tremendous job in Karachi and Lahore. In future we'll inevitably see positive results in the education sector.
To sum up, the history of innovation and creativity is a history which is based on the work of that nation or individual. Form the United States to Europe and to China; from the history of technology to the scenario of Pakistan. Everywhere we see that dreams are always accomplished through hard work. Empty talks and chatter has never helped nations to progress. Ideas without a theoretical foundation are nothing more than fairy tales. Issac Newton, the great English physicist, mathematician and alchemist once said, "I stand on the feet of giant". What he meant was that it was the work of the Italian physicist Galileo who led him to a scientific breakthrough which changed the world forever. If Galileo hadn't dreamt of a new physics, Newton would never have been able to present his revolutionary ideas.
