Graduate / 'Want to become a Professional Accountant' - Appeal letter / personal statement [3]

I'm writing this letter in hopes that the university would reconsider my application and grand me admission into the Masters of Science Program in Accounting.

My ultimate goal is to become a Professional Accountant, with all required certifications. I have remained focus on developing a career in Accounting and I've never deviated. In achieving this, I've recognized the indispensability of a graduate study in Accounting. For the past 8 months, I've directed my efforts into an admission into the Master's program at the University of Texas Arlington. The academic experience University of Texas Arlington provides can build on my multi-cultural background to prepare me to become a Certified Professional Accountant and attain other professional certifications.

My application has suffered setbacks due to unsatisfactory GMAT scores. However, I do not believe my recent score is a true reflection of my zeal and enthusiasm to successfully complete my Graduate degree in Accounting. I have subsequently reflected on my flaws and shortcomings, thereby identifying the areas of improvement.

First, I have discovered that my study habits and learning style need a total overhaul. It definitely played a negative part in my GMAT scores and also some of my lower undergraduate grades. A new method would provide better concentration and reduce skimming which has a negative effect on study. This would be ensured with the access to the school library and availability of better study materials and textbooks. I intend to ensure better time management as more time would be allocated to relevant sections, necessary for effective learning.

I also intend to study more during the day. Typically I study at night and this has been counterproductive in my ability to effectively obtain good grades and scores. Day time study would provide me full attentiveness and more strength to go through graduate school study. My frequency & pattern of study is another area that would be greatly improved. A day to day study plan would prove useful in learning and help identify areas of weakness and where I might need extra effort.

With a renewed understanding of opportunity areas, creating adequate study time would play a strategic role in helping me in the pursuits of my graduate degree. If my request for admission is accepted, I would quit my present job to face my Masters program fully. I believe with no distraction from the work, my full attention and would focus on the program which would provide a direct improvement in performance, helping me in achieving optimum learning and ultimately lead to acquiring the best possible grades and bringing me closer to attaining my set objectives.

The ability to communicate with professors would improve my scores. I'll have better access to study materials and better communication with faculty members and other graduate students which would give me the 360o education I desire in a multi-faceted career like accounting. I am also going to take up pre-graduate school study classes. These classes prepare graduate students adequately on how to cope and acquire the necessary knowledge needed for a graduate degree. I feel a denial in my admission request would be very counterproductive in my quest for Graduate degree.

Since I graduated from Undergraduate school 3 years ago, I've worked as Account manager at 2 of Nigeria's leading financial institutions, developing a solid foundation in teamwork, analytical and problem solving skills. This gives me several strengths to offer as a candidate, especially in my preparedness for research concerning the African marketplace with respect to its financial sector. These valuable professional experiences have helped me to mature and to refine my communication and business skills. I worked at the United Bank for Africa group as an Account manager and Marketing executive in June 2010 up to August 2011 before I moved to the United States. Before then, I worked as an Insurance Executive and Operations Team Leader at N.S.I.A. (formerly ADIC Insurance, Diamond Bank) from July 2009 to June 2010. My present job is with Bank of America as a Sales Associate in Marketing Operations. With inclusion of my internship as an Accounting Clerk in a government parastatal, I have gained vital international experience necessary in taking up a graduate program in accounting. My international diversity of experience is an asset which enables me offer to the school in return, hard work and a unique perspective that comes from significant involvement in both the American and African financial services sector.

My Bachelors degree in Accounting provides the much needed background necessary for a smooth start in a Masters program by providing important prior study in accounting. With credits in Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation and Auditing, I'm placed in a comfortable position to kick start a Master's degree. Also, the rugged experience of study in one of Africa's top universities gives me an edge to undergo the rigorous task of acquiring a Master's degree at University of Texas Arlington.

Apart from ability, it is the passion that matters. Just as what Dale Canergie said: "You will never achieve real success unless you love what you are doing", I strongly believe that as long as you do something passionately and whole-heartedly, you can give out your best, or even beyond your limit. Consequently and indubitably, dedication and good results will follow. This passion has created in me the zeal to pursue a Graduate degree in Accounting at U.T.A. I believe my skills and experiences would add diversity to the school. The way to succeed in any endeavor is identifying areas of opportunities in improvement. Acceptance into the University of Texas Arlington Graduate school of Accounting would help me achieve my immediate and future goals by providing a solid foundation for my accounting career. In my research, the school stands out because there is emphasis on standard and providing first-rate education. I feel confident in my knowledge of the Accounting Graduate School at U.T.A. and its potential to teach me. More importantly, I am confident in my abilities to successfully complete a Graduate degree in flying colors.
