Undergraduate / 'My brother made me stay quiet' - Someone that impacted your life [NEW]

-Write an essay in which you tell us about someone who has made an impact on your life and explain how and why this person is important to you.

For the past 17 years I've been cruel to one and only one person. It is that person that knows me the best and has never left my side. He has shaped me, disciplined me and at time helped me pull pranks; he's the most important person in my life, he's my brother.

I have always been a handful to deal with, either I'm causing trouble or I'm being way too nice, which always raised suspicion. My brother and I have been close ever since I was five, he was my best friend and so were all his friends. I'd never been much of a people person when I was little, I'd always be shy meeting new people, and other times I'd just stay quiet because I simply didn't know what to say. My brother was most definitely everything I wasn't, he was smart, knew almost a thousand people, and was confident in himself. I was nothing like him, I would hesitate to talk to people and saying things like please or thank you were truly tortuous.

My brother was always overprotective, making sure I eat right, and hang out with the right people. He was basically a third parent. All the things I couldn't tell my parents I would tell him, he'd listen and give the best advice. When I told him that I get nervous talking to people that were almost strangers to me, he helped me overcome my fear. I mean I knew their names, but that didn't mean much because I wasn't able to start a conversation with them. Whenever he had the chance he would introduce me to new people and stick around watching to make sure I don't hesitate or get nervous. He introduced me to all his friends, who are now like brothers to me, and their sisters, to whom I soon became best friends with.

I would always think that I was a burden on him because he had to drag me along everywhere he went. So I was relieved that I would no longer be holding him back, that I'd finally had someone to talk to and play games with. It took me a while before I was actually comfortable with them, with their presence so close.

But thanks to my brother now no one can make me stay quiet, I've learned to make friends on my own, and learned the polite way to do it. I would say he was the reason I became a people person, became less nervous to talk to others. He is the reason behind my self confidence.
