Undergraduate / 'community in the South East of London' - describe the world you come from [2]
Prompt 1 - describe the world you come from - for example, your family, community or school - and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspiration
Coming from a community in the South East of London, there's never a day that would pass by without sound of police car or an ambulance siren. This has become part of our daily routine to a point where I know the time an ambulance would pass by.
For me to be able to go and come back as I leave my house every day is not a habit but a miracle I would say. It had become a part of the everyday news to hear about a teen that has been stabbed and left for dead or badly injury.
Every day I go to school, I'd see less of my friends, either dropped out or can't afford to buy their weekly bus pass. After school, I would see them on roads in group; "just passing time" they would say to me.
But I knew the routes they were headed, crime life and being involved in illegal business such as selling drugs/weed. I hurt me for me to think about that as I pass by them.
Seeing this happen daily in my community has shaped my dreams and aspiration to work even harder and accomplish my vision.
I want to influence and shape my community and I believe I will by working hard academically and refining myself as a person. I want to influence young people like myself that there's more to life than buying the next trendy outfit, than 'passing time' on roads.
I want to show my community that there's a lot of opportunity that we could make something only if we strive ourselves to work hard and do better for the community and our future.
I always see myself making a different and having a positive impact on my community. I wanted to tell our stories through films. Enrich a deeper part in the community thought impossible.
I developed the habit of writing words on my notebook each day as I pass through my community never cease to inspire me. I always find a positive side of anything I encounter with. With everything written down in my note book, I would envision it being shown on screen.
I believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful skills in the world. It is clever, imperious. The Storytellers have already settled on exactly what they want you to think and believe.
They have power to make fee good or bad, powerful or defeated even it's just for a second. Films I believe have influenced positive changes in our world and have oppressed different opinions about culture dispute that people would normally talk about.
This influence leads me to want to pursue a degree in filmmaking. I want to be able to use that power positively to express and showcase a lot of stories that I believe ate still yet to be shown starting from my community.
